Saucier helps pace Maine win

ORONO – The University of Maine Black Bears afforded Vermont only one shot on goal Sunday while earning a 2-0 America East field hockey victory on Morse Field at Alfond Stadium.

Shaunessy Saucier of Old Town put the Black Bears (13-5 overall, 3-2 AE) on top with a first-half goal off an assist from Karyn Magno, who set up Jana Ouellette’s goal in the final minute of the contest.

Jaye Lance made one save to post the shutout for the Bears. Ariel Eber made 14 saves on 16 shots for Vermont (2-16, 1-4 AE).

UM-Farmington 4, Elms 0

At Chicopee, Mass. on Sunday, Kristy Veazie and Dorice Reitchel each provided a goal and an assist as the Beavers snapped a three-game losing streak, improving to 9-7.

Angie White and Amanda Nimon scored unassisted goals for UMaine-Farmington (6-3 in North Atlantic Conference action) to back Ashleigh Biette, who did not face any shots.

Kristen Kutz and Colleen Strunk combined to made 12 saves on 20 shots for Elms (2-15, 1-8 NAC).

Southern Maine 2, Fitchburg 1

At Fitchburg, Mass., Kerry Leonard snapped a 1-1 tie at 41:42 to lift the Huskies to the win on Saturday.

Leonard assisted on a goal by Sarah Dolley while Darci Holland assisted on Leonard’s for 12-5 Southern Maine of Gorham. Jessie Superchi had three saves on nine shots.

Bethany Arsenault scored the 5-9 Falcons’ goal on a penalty stroke. Christina Charron stopped 15 of 23 shots.

Bowdoin 4, Colby 1

At Brunswick Saturday, Marissa O’Neil scored two goals and assisted on another as the Polar Bears rolled.

Sarah Horn and Christi Gannon added goals for 10-2 Bowdoin. Gillian McDonald had two saves on four shots.

Adrienne LeClair scored for the White Mules of Waterville with Michaelyn Bortolotti getting the assist. Jess Laniewski stopped nine of 18 shots.

Thomas 2, Elms 0

At Chicopee, Mass. Saturday, Molly Tibbetts scored in the first half and Amber Richard in the second half to earn a win for the Terriers.

Jen Lane saw four shots and made one save for 6-5 Thomas.

Endicott 3, Saint Joseph’s 1

At Beverly, Mass., Caitlin Murray, Kara Fournier and Ashley Dodge each had a goal for Endicott in the win on Saturday.

Kelly McNamara had six saves on seven shots for 12-6 Endicott.

Kaitlyn Scott scored unassisted for the 4-12 Monks. Jessica LaFlamme stopped 13 out of 16 shots.

Becker 2, Thomas 1

At Leicester, Mass. Sunday, Shannon Lamb scored a pair of goals to lead Becker past Thomas.

Michelle DeSantis had 13 saves for 15-2 Becker.

Amber Richard scored for the 6-6 Terriers, assisted by Alesia Dalton. Jen Lane blocked 11 shots.

Women’s soccer

Husson 3, Maine Maritime 2

At Bangor Sunday, Kristin Pelletier got Husson on the board first on an assist by Kaylin Caron and then assisted on their second goal scored by Beatriz DeYcaza.

Shaina Goode scored unassisted for the 10-4-2 Brave’s third goal. Leah Drew had nine saves on 13 shots.

The 8-5-1 Mariners of Castine received goals from Jessica Taylor, assisted by Amy Asselin, and Stacy Jones, unassisted.

Hartford 2, Maine 1 (OT)

At West Hartford, Conn., Cindy Walsh headed in a Hilde Bakke free kick with 41 seconds left in the first overtime, lifting the Hawks to victory.

Katie Hodge scored off an Annie Hamel assist in the second half for the Black Bears (10-3-1 overall, 4-2-1 America East). Tanya Adorno made one save for UMaine, which outshot Hartford (6-10-2, 5-2-1 AE) 13-5, including 6-0 in the second half.

Bakke scored the Hawks’ first-half goal on a penalty kick. Heather Hinton made three saves.

Thomas 3, Wheelock 2 (2OT)

At Waterville on Sunday, Mary Pratt scored with 1:14 remaining in the second overtime period, lifting the Terriers to victory.

Missy White and Jasmine Carey tallied second-half goals for 5-10 Thomas, with Jasmine Carey and Pratt posting assists. Jessie Craft made four saves on nine shots for the Terriers, who are 3-8 in the North Atlantic Conference.

Alicia Eddy paced Wheelock (1-16, 1-9) with a goal and an assist. Noelle Safar netted the other goal. Jess Stacy made 11 saves on 26 shots.

Bowdoin 3, Colby 2

At Brunswick, Bowdoin College scored three goals in the first 29 minutes of play and held off a late charge by Colby to take the victory.

Michal Shapiro headed home a goal off a corner kick from Cedar Goldman to give the 11-2 Polar Bears the lead in the first five minutes. Goldman chipped another corner kick to Ivy Blackmore who scored from just inside the box. Senior Jill Falwell added a goal of her own with an assist from Julie Gallant. Anna Shapell made two stops on eight shots.

Rallying once before halftime, Christina Andaya took a cross from Laura Williamson and booted it home to make the score 3-1. Williamson cut the lead to one with the assist from Andaya. Liza Benson made four saves and Beth Riley made three for the 5-5-1 Mules.

UM-Farmington 9, Wheelock 0

At Farmington Saturday, Jodie Welch scored twice for Farmington.

Julia Malek, Meghan McCrum, Mrya Kimball, Erin Campbell, Samantha Goyette, Shanna McGary and Stephanie Miller all scored. Addie Price and Heidi Parker each had two assists while Hannah Boger, Brandi Dow and Campbell each had one. Patty Boutin and Billie Jo Putnam shared goalkeeping duties, but neither had to make any saves.

Jess Stacy stopped 15 of 35 shots for Wheelock.

UM-Farmington 6, Lesley 1

At Farmington Sunday, Erin Campbell had a goal in each half. Heidi Packer had a goal and two assists to lead UMaine-Farmington to its 12th win.

Erin Findlan, assisted by Julia Malek, and Noelle Doucette, assisted by Addie Price, and Kelsey Biuc’s goal completed the scoring. Pattie Boutin and Billie Jo Putnam shared the goal with one save for 12-3-1 Farmington.

Whitney Giekl scored on a direct free kick for 2-14 Lesley.

UM-Fort Kent 3, UMPI 2

At Fort Kent Saturday, Jess Gagnon converted a penalty kick in the second half to give the UMaine-Fort Kent Bengals the win.

Megan Foreman added two unassisted goals for 7-7 UMFK. Allison Lutz had seven saves.

Lukie Gagnon and Tara Cropley each notched a goal and an assist to lead the 3-8-1 Owls. Sam Greer turned away 10 shots.

USM 0, UM-Dartmouth 0 (2OT)

At Gorham Saturday, Rachel Kwantz had four saves on six shots for 6-7-2 Southern Maine while Amanda Tavares went 5 for 12 for the 4-8-4 Corsairs.

Endicott 2, Saint Joseph’s 0

At Standish Saturday, Kate Healey shot a goal into the upper right corner of the net off a pass from Katie Cederberg.

For 14-2-1 Endicott, Tina Loguidice saved one of the two shots she faced. Cheryl Northrop made eight saves on 21 shots for the 5-10-2 Monks.

Men’s soccer

Husson 3, UM-Presque Isle 1

At Bangor, Shane Coffin scored one goal and assisted on another as the Braves prevailed on Sunday.

Chris Cacela and Mike Hoffman added goals and Shawn Ward an assist for Husson. James Friend has seven saves against eight shots.

Brad Holabird scored unassisted for the UMaine-Presque Isle Owls. Tim Dolley faced 26 shots and made 10 saves.

SMCC 2, Unity 1 (penalty kicks)

At Unity Sunday, Pio Anthony converted the game-winning penalty kick to give Southern Maine Community College the Yankee Conference title.

Andres Peterson added a goal for the 12-3-1 winners of South Portland. Jonathan Bedard had seven saves on eight shots.

C.J. Perry scored the 9-7 Rams’ goal. Tyler Ferguson stopped four of five shots.

Keene State 3, Southern Maine 1

At Gorham Sunday, John Harke scored two goals to spark the Owls to victory.

Casey Banks posted a goal and an assist for Keene State (12-5-1 overall, 4-1-1 in Little East Conference).

Andy Budelman scored on an Ian Doumas assist for Southern Maine (7-8-2, 3-3 LEC). Kane DiBenedetto made six saves on 15 shots.

Saint Joseph’s 2, Newbury 0

At Chestnut Hill, Mass., Matt Grauwiler and Dave Rosquete notched a goal each in the second half to lead the Monks to the win Saturday.

Jeff Yaeger had seven saves on 19 shots for 2-14 Saint Joseph’s of Standish.

Andres Gutierrez stopped 13 of 26 shots for 2-13-1 Newbury.

USM 1, UMass-Dartmouth 0

At North Dartmouth, Mass., Saturday, Ian Doumas’ goal gave the Huskies the win.

Kane DiBenedetto had six saves on seven shots for 7-7-2 Southern Maine of Gorham.

Adam Wells stopped two of three shots for the 5-7-2 Corsiars.

Maine 0, Binghamton 0 (2OT)

At Vestal, N.Y., Chad Morgeon had four saves on 17 shots for 6-7-3 Maine while Stefan Gonet stopped four out of eight for 9-2-5 Binghamton on Saturday.

Bowdoin 2, Colby 1

At Brunswick Saturday, Tom Bresnahan scored off an Andrew Russo pass in the second half to lift Bowdoin past Colby.

Travis Derr had two saves on five shots for the 10-1-2 Polar Bears.

Chris MacFayden scored the 6-5-2 White Mules of Waterville’s lone goal, with an assist from Daniel Kierman. Brian Davidson stopped six out of 11 shots.

UM-Fort Kent 5, UMPI 2

At Fort Kent, Aadil Mootassem knocked in two goals to lead the University of Maine-Fort Bengals to a Saturday win.

Gintaras Lenkutis scored two more goals for 10-3 UM-Fort Kent while Juan Murphy added another. Nick Thibodeau made six saves.

Sebastian Itman and Jay Johnson had a goal each for the 6-7 Owls. Matt Watson and Tim Dolley had five saves apiece.

Women’s hockey

Maine beats, ties Colgate

At Alfond Arena in Orono on Sunday, Sonia Corriveau scored a power-play goal off assists from Tristan Desmet and Vicky Johnstone with 11 seconds left in the first period, giving the Black Bears a 2-1 victory.

The two teams battled to a 2-2 overtime tie on Saturday.

Andrea Steranko had converted a Kim MacElhaney assist to tie the game with 4:40 left in the opening period for 1-2-1 Maine. Lara Smart made 23 saves on 24 shots.

Kristy MacDonald scored the goal for 4-1-1 Colgate, also in the first period. Rebecca Lahar made 16 saves on 18 shots.

On Saturday, the Black Bears scored twice in the first period but couldn’t hold the lead.

Kate Hartley and Karen Droog had the goals for Maine with Kate Sunstrom, Meagan Aarts and Morgan Janusc getting assists. Smart had 29 saves on 31 shots.

Becky Irvine notched a goal plus an assist to lead Colgate, and Allison Paino added a goal. Lahar stopped 15 of 17 shots.

Volleyball

UMaine gets swept

At Orono Saturday, Maryland Baltimore County swept UMaine 30-26, 30-25, 30-25.

Jocelyn Teoh had 12 kills and 12 digs to lead 14-11 UMBC. Christine Skala had 20 digs, Andrea Clarke 15 and Megan Gross 10.

Leah Guidinger had 15 kills and nine digs for the 10-17 Black Bears. Brooke Truong had 14 digs and seven kills while Shelly Seipp notched 11 digs.
