BANGOR – Penobscot Theatre Company and The Warren Center for Communication and Learning will sponsor “The Miracle Worker,” William Gibson’s account of the early life of Helen Keller and her remarkable teacher, Annie Sullivan.

“The Miracle Worker” will run Nov. 5-23 at the Bangor Opera House, 131 Main St. Half-price performances are scheduled for 7 p.m. Nov. 5-6. Opening night is 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7. A pay-what-you-wish performance will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4.

“The Miracle Worker” was originally staged as a television drama and later adapted into the play and the film, which starred Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke.

Co-producer of “The Miracle Worker” is the Bangor area’s oldest not-for-profit, professional speech and hearing center, The Warren Center for Communication and Learning, which is dedicated to helping people of all ages overcome barriers to effective communication and learning.

The Warren Center was founded by the Junior League of Bangor in 1961 as the Bangor Regional Speech and Hearing Center after a measles epidemic hit central Maine in the 1950s. The center expanded its services from working on hearing and speech problems of the very young to offering services and support for people of all ages. The creative team for PTC’s production of “The Miracle Worker” includes New York-based director Don Jordan, costume designer Susan Smith, lighting designer Lynne Chase, and set designer Greg Mitchell.

John Bapst Memorial High School junior Elizabeth Lutz will play Helen Keller. Lutz has played many Shakespeare characters at the waterfront during her five years with the theater’s summer teen camp.

Lutz’ love of theater began in summer stock at Hackmatack Theater in Berwick where she acted in “Annie,” “Pirates of Penzance,” “A Midsummer’s Night Dream,” “The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe,” and “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” She enjoys writing and French class in addition to participating in school musicals.

Kae Cooney will play Annie Sullivan. Other actors include Alex Cherington as Captain Keller, Pamela Rogers as Kate Keller, James Bocock as Jamie Keller and local actors Maggie McKee, Assata Sherrill, Lynne Rampe, Taylor Schultz, Katie Schneck, Laura Aube, Conor Kenny and Adam Kuykendall.
