MARS HILL – A loan of up to $15,000 for a new town fire station is the single local referendum question on the Nov. 4 ballot for Mars Hill voters.

Residents will vote on whether to allow the Mars Hill Town Council to borrow the money should it receive a $250,000 Community Development Block Grant for the building.

The proposed 70-by-100-foot building, which is being designed by Buck Engineering of Presque Isle, would include four vehicle bays, meeting space and offices and be located on town property near Market Street.

Town Manager Ray Mersereau said last week that the proposed building will be cheaper for the town than the other alternative – renovating Mars Hill’s 57-year-old fire station.

Polls in Mars Hill will be open 9 a.m.-8 p.m. at the Mars Hill town office.
