On casinos and the Indian nation, Chris Crittenden wrote about our moral obligations to ourselves and our state in his commentary, “Casinos and ethics” (BDN, Oct. 13). What about our moral obligation to the Passamaquoddy and Penobscot nations? We of European descent made the Indian nations what they are today in this country – poverty stricken. If it was not for the pitiful economic state the Indian nation is in today they would not have any reason to build a casino.

Like any non-European race in this country, the Indian nations have had to struggle as second- class citizens for the economic relief and respect they deserve. Money talks in this country and if the Passamaquoddy and Penobscot Nations are allowed to build their casino, money they will have and lots of it.

Crittenden wrote of moral issues and the pursuit of happiness. What about the Indian nations’ pursuit of happiness? We are bound morally to help them find the happiness and economic deliverance they are seeking.
