Parents looking to provide an interesting and educational opportunity for their children may want to head to Orland on Sunday for the Craig Brook National Fish Hatchery’s annual Spawning Spectacular.
The hatchery, which produces Atlantic salmon, will stage the event from noon until 3 p.m.
The family outing format will let children and parents watch the salmon-spawning process. In addition, the hatchery will be open for tours, and the visitor’s center and museum will be open. Coffee and donuts will be available.
Coyote exhibit opens
The Maine Wildlife Park in Gray is opening its new coyote exhibit today.
The dedication of the park is set for 11 a.m. today.
The new coyote exhibit is an acre in size, and features both forested and opened areas. The enclosure is surrounded by an eight-foot fence where visitors can view the coyotes from along a walkway.
The exhibit was made possible through the donation of mostly private funds to the Friends of the Maine Wildlife Park. Included in those donations were funds created in the memory of Michael Huff, a local teenager who was killed in a snowmobile accident in 2002.
The Maine Wildlife Park will be open until Nov. 11. It will reopen on April 15, 2004.
For more information about hours of operation and admission fees, call 657-4977.
The Maine Wildlife Park is located on Route 26 in Gray, off Exit 11 of the Maine Turnpike. It is operated by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.
