Unity tops EMCC in Tipoff opener

UNITY – Jeremy Kervin scored 20 points, grabbed 13 rebounds, and had three assists to lead the Unity College men’s basketball team by the Eastern Maine Community College Eagles 75-67 in the Unity Tipoff Tourney Friday night.

Matt Kent chipped in with 18 points and five assists for the winners. Jared Erskine added 17 points and Noah Schneider put in 10.

Unity will play for the title in its tourney today at 2 p.m. against Massachusetts Bay College.

Kyle Arbuckle paced EMCC with 23 points, Daryl Watson put in 19, and Joseph Dionne netted 12.

At Fort Kent, Anthony Breland scored 28 points and Nikrama Hylton added 15 to lead University College-Cape Breton of Nova Scotia by UMaine-Fort Kent.

Bartas Samaitis paced UMFK with 31 points, Roy Goldstein added 17, and Shane Durost put in 12.

UMFK took a seven-point halftime lead before Cape Breton rallied in the second with a strong effort from Breland.

At West Hartford, Conn., Leah Guidinger had 10 kills and 13 digs to lead the University of Maine past Hartford 30-18, 30-24, 30-26.

Brooke Truong racked up three service aces and 10 digs for the 11-18 Black Bears. Kaili Jordan had 17 digs and Brittany Howe had 14 kills.

Stephanie Volckers had 15 kills and 14 digs for the 8-17 Hawks. Kelly McEathron had 10 kills with Erin Bailey making 10 digs.
