Caron scores 2 goals, Husson wins playoff

BANGOR – Kaylin Caron netted two goals in the first half to lead No. 3 Husson College to a 5-1 women’s soccer win over Mount Ida in NAC quarterfinal action Sunday.

May Chen, Shaina Goode, and Kristen Pelletier each scored a goal for 12-4-2 Husson. Bea DeYcaza had two assists. Leah Drew stopped six of eight shots.

Kristen Coughlin netted a second half goal for 8-9-1 Mt. Ida as Pam Titus made 11 saves on 16 shots.

UM-Farmington 4, Johnson St. 2

At Farmington, Jodie Welch scored a goal and had two assists to help lead the No. 1 University of Maine at Farmington to the win past No. 8 Johnston State.

Erin Campbell had a goal and one assist for the 12-1 Beavers. Heidi Parker and Julia Malek both netted a goal. Patty Boutin stopped three of five shots.

Crystal Williams and Molly Brady Searby each scored a goal for 5-7-1 Johnson State and Vanessa Ralston had an assist.

Castleton St. 6, Maine Maritime 1

At Castleton, Vt., Erin Hanlon had a hat trick with three goals to lead No. 2 Castleton State past No. 7 Maine Maritime Academy.

Amy Yandow scored two goals and Brean Farquharson had a goal and three assists for 15-5 Castleton. Hayley Daden, Erin Huckabee, Casey Fitzgerald, and Tarah Thomas each had one assist.

Jessica Taylor scored on a Amy Asselin assist in the first half for 8-6 Maine Maritime. Meghan Marshall made eight saves on 14 shots.

UMFK 8, St. Joseph’s (Vt.) 1

At Fort Kent on Saturday, Jess Gagnon scored four goals as the University of Maine at Fort Kent cruised to victory in a Sunrise Conference semifinal.

UMFK will face Lyndon State in the championship game at Lyndonville, Vt., next Saturday.

Meghan Goff and Megan Foreman each added a goal and an assist for the Bengals, while Whitney Zettergren and Kara Jackson added goals. Amy Kelley chipped in with two assists, and Amy Lagasse and Ashley Hichborn had one assist each.

Colby 1, Tufts 0

At Waterville, first-year forward Laura Williamson broke the Colby record for goals in a season as the Mules outlasted-Tufts.

Elizabeth Riley and Liza Benson each had three saves for Colby, which ended its season with an 8-5-1 record. Meg McCourt made six saves for 9-5 Tufts.

E. Connecticut 1, USM 0

At Mansfield, Conn., Jen Orme scored late in the first half to lift the host Warriors past the University of Southern Maine.

Stacy Schofield made three saves for 9-6-1 Eastern Connecticut. Marcy Ansley made eight saves for USM, which ended its season with a 6-9-2 record.

Men’s soccer

Mount Ida 1, Husson 0

At Newton, Mass., on Saturday, David Moynihan scored on an assist from Diego Centurion in the second half as Mount Ida eliminated Husson in a North Atlantic Conference quarterfinal.

Matt Goodman made nine saves on 24 shots for 8-8 Husson. Dan Boreham made seven saves on 16 shots for 7-8-1 Mount Ida.

Eastern Connecticut 3, USM 1

At Portland, Joe Lupone scored two goals and Jarod Groat added a goal and an assist as Eastern Connecticut eliminated the University of Southern Maine from possible postseason contention.

USM needed a win to qualify for the Little East Conference tournament, but finishes its season with an 8-9-2 record – the Huskies’ best finish since 1992.

Zach Ansley scored USM’s goal on a Sean Tardif assist.

Tufts 2, Colby 1

At Waterville, the host Mules missed a chance to qualify for the New England Small College Athletic Conference tournament by losing their final regular-season game.

Ben Castellot and Mike Blea scored goals for 6-6-2 Tufts, offsetting a goal by Colby’s Chris FacFadyen that was assisted by James Pilgrim.

Matt Sullivan made six saves on 12 shots for Tufts. Brian Davidson made nine saves on 21 shots for 6-6-2 Colby.

Bowdoin 3, Trinity 0

At Brunswick, Tom Bresnehan scored two goals to push 12-1-2 Bowdoin College to their ninth straight victory.

Bobby Desilets had a goal and an assist for the Polar Bears as Andrew Russo and Anthony Regis both had an assist. Travis Derr made five saves on seven shots.

Michael Doherty stopped eight of 22 shots for 3-10-2 Trinity.

NAC Quarterfinals

UM-Farmington 3, Thomas 0

At Farmington, Adam Zukowski scored two goals in the second half to help the No. 1 University of Maine at Farmington past No. 8 Thomas College.

Zach Pettit netted a goal for the 13-4-1 Beavers and Andrew Link had one assist. Seabren Reeves stopped the only shot that he faced.

Sam McKenney made 10 saves on 25 shots for 4-13-1 Thomas.

Volleyball

Maine 3, Stony Brook 0

At Stony Brook, N.Y., Brittany Howe had 13 kills to help lead the University of Maine to the win over Stony Brook, 30-23, 30-18, 30-28 on Saturday.

Brooke Truong had three service aces and six digs for the 12-18 Black Bears and Justine Chabot added eight digs.

Rachel Goldsmith had 12 kills and six digs for 15-12 Stony Brook and Abby Egan had 13 digs.

Women’s hockey

Yale 1-2, Maine 0-2

At New Haven, Conn., the University of Maine lost to Yale on Saturday 1-0 and tied them on Sunday 2-2 in overtime.

On Saturday, Kristin Savard scored the game’s only goal on the power play as Yale University won it’s season opener.

The Bulldogs outshot Maine 29-12, with Sarah Love earning the shutout by making 11 saves. Lara Smart made 26 stops for Maine.

On Sunday, Karen Droog scored on a penalty shot in the first period for the 1-3-2 Black Bears to answer a Kelsey Johnson power play goal.

Kelly Law made it 2-1 off a Brigitte Laflamme pass but Yale’s Nicole Symington equalized on the power play. Erin Duggan and Deena Caplette assisted.

Smart stopped 29 shots while Love rejected 27 for 1-0-1 Yale.

Field hockey

UM-Farmington 2, Thomas 0

At Farmington, Dorice Reitchel scored with 29:16 left in the game to life the University of Maine at Farmington over Thomas.

Mary Sinclair scored on a Lauren Stevens assist with 27:28 left for the 10-7 beavers. Ashleigh Biette made eight saves on 11 shots.

Jen Lane had seven saves on 12 shots for 6-7 Thomas College.

WNEC 2, Husson 1 (OT)

At Springfield, Mass., Allison Jameson scored the game-winning goal off of a Nicole DeRosa assist three minutes in to over time to hand No.6 Western New England College the win over No. 3 Husson College in the first round of the NAC Tournament.

Jamie Giles and Shani Hollins combined to make 11 saves on 13 shots for 10-5 Husson.

Colby 3, Tufts 2

At Waterville, the host Mules ended their regular season by winning outscoring Tufts 3-1 in the second series of penalty strokes.

With the win, Colby (9-5) clinched the fifth seed in the New England Small College Athletic Conference tournament.

Colby rallied from a 2-0 deficit to force overtime on goals by Kim Betz and Wendy Bonner. Tufts got first-half goals by Jennie Sachs and Lea Napolitano.

Colby goalie Jess Laniewski made seven saves on 15 shots, while Julie Jackson made 15 saves on 27 shots for 5-9 Tufts.

USM 2, Bridgewater State 1

At Bridgewater, Mass., Kerry Leonard had a goal and an assist as the visiting Huskies posted their second straight win.

USM ended its regular seaosn with a 14-5 record, 8-2 in the Little East Conference. The Huskies will be the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament and will host Framingham State in the first round of the playoffs on Tuesday.

Kayla Vaughn of Monroe also scored for USM, while Renee Heath added an assist.

Danielle D’Agostino scored for 10-5 Bridgewater State.

Bowdoin 6, Tufts 0

At Brunswick, Marissa O’Neil netted a goal and had three assist to help lead Bowdoin College to the NESCAC semi-finals.

Colleen McDonald, Abby Daley, Amanda Burrage, Christi Gannon, and Gessy LePage all scored a goal for 13-2 Bowdoin. Britney Carr had one assist as Gillian McDonald and Kate Leonard didn’t face a shot.

Julie Jackson and Angela Rappoli combined for nine saves on 15 shots.

Amherst 1, Colby 0

At Amherst, Mass., Erin Leydon scored on a Katherine Skrivan assist with 7:13 left in the game to lead No. 4 Amherst College past No. 5 Colby College on Sunday.

K.C. Cosentino made one save on two shots for 11-4 Amherst who advances to the NESCAC Semifinals to face No. 1 Middlebury College on Saturday.

Jessica Ann Laniewski stopped four of 13 shots for 9-6 Colby.
