Machias edges Beavers Bulldogs win Eastern D title

MACHIAS – Austin Roberts scored the game-winning goal on a Chris Correll assist with 7:36 left Saturday to give No. 1 Machias a 2-1 win over Washburn and the Class D Eastern Maine boys soccer championship.

The regional title is the Bulldogs’ third in the last six years.

Machias will meet Waynflete of Portland, which defeated Richmond 1-0 in the West title game, for the state championship next Saturday.

Correll tied the game on an unassisted goal 5:23 into the second half for 14-1 Machias. Marcus Frutchey stopped nine of 11 shots.

Isaac Carney scored the game’s first goal at 14:55 into the first half for No. 2 Washburn, 12-1-4. The Beavers’ Jason Thompson made 16 saves on 20 attempts.
