LEWISTON – Jamie Walker carried the ball a team-record 45 times for 159 yards and a touchdown as Bates beat winless Bowdoin 20-17 on Saturday in the New England Small College Athletic Conference.

Walker, making his first career start, scored on a 2-yard sweep to the left, giving Bates a 17-9 lead early in the fourth quarter. After holding Bowdoin to a three-and-out, Bates (2-5) appeared to take control when Nat Carr hit a 35-yard field goal with 8:38 to play.

Bowdoin (0-7) responded with a 67-yard touchdown drive that consumed just 34 seconds. Rick Leclerc completed a 40-yard pass to Brian Durant, and Rob Patchett followed with a 27-yard touchdown run up the middle.

Bates managed to eat up the next 7:20 with a 15-play drive that was finally halted at the Polar Bears’ 15-yard line. Leclerc then drove the ball to his own 44 before time ran out.

Leclerc finished the game 18 of 35 passing for 227 yards. Bowdoin place-kicker Dan Hayes hit all three of his field-goal attempts, while Carr had two field goals for the Bobcats.
