2 incumbents re-elected in Brewer

BREWER – Two incumbents were re-elected to three-year terms Tuesday to the City Council and the spouse of the city manager beat out an incumbent for a seat on the school committee. The election drew 4,074 people, or 56 per cent of the city’s registered voters to the polls.

In unofficial returns, Michael Celli, 48, received 2,271 votes while Larry Doughty, 64, got 2,161 votes. Ailine Simon, 74, received 1,162 votes.

Amanda Bost, 43, wife of Brewer City Manager Steve Bost, was elected to her first three-year term on the school committee with 1,901 votes. Incumbent Ruth-Marie Spellman was re-elected to her ninth term with 1,855 votes.

Three-term incumbent B. Calvin Bubar II, 57, received 1,416 votes and Frank Rapp, 48, who was running for his first term on the committee, got 463 votes. Jerry Goss, 56, who was running unopposed, was elected to his first term on the Brewer High School board of trustees with 3,066 votes.

Both charter amendments passed by wide margins. An amendment to end the ward divisions in the city passed 2,257 to 1,182 and an amendment to require the city manager to live in Brewer passed 2,819 to 683.

In an unusual twist, a local question about building a racino in Brewer that was removed from the ballot Friday was rejected by absentee voters. Ballots cast before Bangor and Capital Seven LLC inked a deal last week to build the facility at Bangor Raceway in Bass Park rejected the Brewer proposal 149-122.

However, Brewer voters approved the referendum question on the state ballot to allow racinos in Bangor and Scarborough by 2,253 votes to 1,457 votes.
