Bucksport woman killed in crash Head-on collision leaves other driver with internal injuries, dislocated hip

PROSPECT – A Bucksport woman was killed Tuesday when the car she was driving was hit head-on about a mile south of the Waldo-Hancock Bridge.

Lynette A. Clement, 44, died at the scene of massive internal injuries after her 1991 Subaru Justy was struck head-on by a 1992 Honda Accord driven by Robert R. Loch, 24, also of Bucksport.

Loch suffered internal injuries and a dislocated hip in the collision. He was removed from his vehicle by emergency personnel from the Stockton Springs Ambulance Service, then flown to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where he was listed in stable condition.

Waldo County sheriff’s Deputy Merl Reed said the accident occurred about 7:50 a.m. on U.S. Route 1. Clement was headed south toward Belfast when the northbound vehicle driven by Loch crossed into her lane and struck her car head-on. Reed said it appeared that Clement attempted to avoid the collision.

“She pulled over as far as she could,” said Reed. “She obviously saw him coming and tried to get out of the way.”

Reed said it appeared that the impact actually lifted the lighter Subaru, as there were no skid marks from the point of the collision to where Clement’s vehicle came to rest on the side of the road. The front end of the Subaru was completely crushed, he said. The Stockton Springs Fire Department used a hydraulic cutting device to pull Clement from her vehicle.

Loch’s vehicle did a 360-degree turn on impact and came to rest in the northbound lane of travel. Both vehicles were total losses, and traffic on the highway was rerouted for approximately 21/2 hours before the Route 1 travel lanes were cleared for traffic.

Reed said the road conditions at the time were dry and that visibility was excellent. Reed said he attempted to interview Loch at the hospital but that he was under medication and uncommunicative. Reed said he planned to interview Loch later in the week. Reed said neither alcohol nor speed appeared to be factors in the crash.

“There were no witnesses,” said Reed. “Apparently there was a male who made a call from a cell phone but he left the scene before we could talk to him. I’m asking that he contact us to assist in the investigation.”

Maine State Police Sgt. Gerry Madden, who was working a traffic detail at the bridge, was the first officer on the scene. Waldo County Deputy Jason Bosco and members of the Prospect Fire Department also assisted at the scene. The accident will be reconstructed by state Trooper Perry Hatch and Waldo County Sheriff Scott Story. Trooper Ryan Brockway will conduct a vehicle autopsy later this week.
