Coach’s comments: “He has been very consistent and the reason is he prepares so well. He makes big saves when you need them and he makes tough saves look easy. He’s very composed.”

MIKE LUNDIN

Career highlights: 2003 Minnesota Mr. Hockey finalist; Minneapolis Star Tribune’s Metro Hockey Player of the Year and Associated Press Minnesota Hockey Player of the Year; scored first goal in 2-1 win over Boston University

Coach’s comments: “He’s off to a great start. He gets stronger every weekend. He has great poise with the puck and he’s very strong on his feet.”

Career highlights: Culver Military Academy’s leading scorer a year ago with 67 points; had his first college point, a goal, in a 6-2 win over Wisconsin in the championship game at the Maverick Stampede in Omaha

Coach’s comments: “He has made an immediate impact with his skating and playmaking ability. His skating is the biggest reason he’s been able to adjust so quickly as a true freshman.”

STEVE MULLIN

Career stats: 18 games, 1-0-1

Career highlights: Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s best defenseman in 2002 thanks to his 51 points in 60 games; notched only college point, a goal, in 4-2 win over Merrimack on Feb. 9

Coach’s comments: “He has really emerged as a very dependable defenseman. He has been, perhaps, our steadiest defenseman so far this season. He hasn’t made many mistakes and he has been surprisingly physical.”

Career highlights: plus-3 in 37 games last season; won top defenseman and fan appreciation awards two years ago; Manitoba Junior Hockey League All-Star

Coach’s comments: “He’s a fierce competitor. He’ll block a shot and then lead the rush the other way.”

TROY BARNES

Career highlights: Second among Maine’s defensemen in scoring last year with 14 points in 38 games; one of nation’s top-scoring defensemen this season with 1-6-7 in 7 games; Central Junior Hockey League’s top defenseman in 2001

Coach’s comments: “He has elevated his game. He shows a lot of poise on the power play and he is a very smart penalty-killer. His strength and skating have taken a good jump and, as a result, he’s playing with a lot of confidence.”

MAT DESCHAMPS

Career stats: 54 games, 2-5-7

Career highlights: Scored shorthanded goal in college debut; plus-4 in 27 games last season including some time at forward

Coach’s comments: “His strengths are his mobility, his defensive awareness, and his ability to handle one-on-ones. He skates real well. I expect him in the lineup real soon.”

Career highlights: Scored overtime game-winner in 4-3 NCAA Tournament win over Harvard his freshman year; scored three goals in his last five games last season

Coach’s comments: “He has a real heavy shot, real good hockey sense and he’s a tough, physical player. He has a good knack for keeping possession of the puck in traffic. He and Ben Murphy are one of our best penalty-killing pairs.”

MICHEL LEVEILLE

Vital stats: center, sophomore, 5-9, 180; Levis, Quebec

Career stats: 7 games, 0-8-8

Career highlights: At least one assist in first six college games; third-leading scorer in the British Columbia Junior Hockey League two years ago with 108 points in 52 games

Coach’s comments: “He’s a great passer and has a good nose for the net. He’s a very smooth skater, he handles the puck real well, and he’s surprisingly strong on his feet. He can hit.”

KEITH JOHNSON

(No. 12)

Career stats: 5 games, 4-0-4

Career highlights: Three-game goal-scoring streak to begin college career including game-winner in 3-2 victory over St. Lawrence; Defensive Player of the Year for the New England Junior Coyotes last year

Coach’s comments: “He’s a real hard worker and a great competitor who wins loose pucks. He has great speed, very good hockey sense, and a good nose for the net.”

TODD JACKSON

Coach’s comments: “He has taken his game to another level in every area, particularly offensively. He’s taking charge with the puck a lot more. He’s taking the puck to the net more. He’s a dangerous penalty-killer, he wins pucks on the power play, and he’s always a threat when he’s on the ice.”

GREG MOORE

Career stats: 40 games, 14-11-25

Career highlights: Scored first college goal in first game, vs. Lake Superior State; had at least a point in his first six games this season (5-4-9); will play for Team USA in the World Junior Championships for second straight year later this season; 5th-round pick of Calgary last summer

Coach’s comments: “He’s a very complete player. He’s physically strong in front of the net and along the wall. He has very good hockey sense and a real good touch around the net for a big man. He trains very hard off the ice and has added a step to his speed. He’s one of the fastest skaters on our team.”

BEN MURPHY

Career stats: 78 games, 10-22-32

Career highlights: He is off to his best start (7 games, 1-5-6); team’s leading freshman scorer two years ago with 16 points in 39 games; Hockey Night in Boston MVP in 2000

Coach’s comments: “He is emerging in so many different ways. He blocks shots, wins faceoffs, takes a hit to make a play, and he’s one of our best penalty-killers. He has expanded his role. He’s a real good hockey player. He’s one of the guys who is the heart and soul of our team.”

JOSH SOARES

Career stats: 3 games, 0-0-0

Career highlights: Led Ontario Provincial Hockey League in scoring last year with 124 points; Western Conference MVP

Coach’s comments: “He has an excellent scoring touch and brings a physical element to the game. He’s a tough competitor with a good sense for the net. He needs to work on his skating and defensive game.”

CAM LYALL

Career stats: 41 games, 1-7-8

Career highlights: Scored goal in win at Northeastern last season; collected six points in 23 games a year ago; chosen team’s most improved player last year

Coach’s comments: “He’s a strong defensive player who skates very well and doesn’t make many mistakes.”

Career highlights: Third in Hockey East and fifth in country in goals two years ago with 29; Hockey East All-Rookie team choice; off to a fast start with 6-2-8 in 8 games; played for Great Britain in World Championships last two years and tied for tournament lead in goals with four last year; 6th-round pick of Philadelphia in 2000

Coach’s coments: “He has gained a step from last year. He trained real hard over the summer. He looks strong on his feet, he has been getting involved in the play, and has been getting a lot of scoring chances. I think he’ll have a real good senior year.”

MIKE HAMILTON

Career highlights: Captain and leading scorer (93 points) for the Merritt Centennials in the British Columbia Junior Hockey League last year; 6th-round pick of the Atlanta Thrashers last summer; had first college point, an assist, in win over Merrimack

Coach’s comments: “He has real good speed and a quick release on his shot. He reminds me of Lucas Lawson in a lot of ways. He doesn’t realize how strong he is yet. He drives the net well.”

JON JANKUS

Career highlights: Four points so far this season including game-winning goal and two game-winning assists; had a goal against Northeastern during the 2001-02 season in which he appeared in nine games; 2000 Ontario Hockey Association Rookie of the Year

Coach’s comments: “It’s great to have Jon back. He’s a real tough competitor, he’s great on faceoffs and he’s a very physical player. He has excellent hands for a big guy. When he hits, he hits hard.”

Coach’s comments: “He has been a leader on and off the ice. He carries the puck real well. He has a great jump to his step. His first couple of steps are so quick that he separates himself [from the opposing forwards]. He’s a heavy hitter and a fierce competitor with a heavy shot.”

DUSTIN PENNER

Career highlights: Had a four-game point-scoring streak earlier this season; scored his goal in win over Wisconsin; redshirt last season after transferring from Minot State-Bottineau where he won team’s Most Determined Award two years ago

Coach’s comments: “He took advantage of his redshirt year to get himself in much better physical condition, and he’s made an immediate impact this year. He has great hands for a big guy, a good knack in traffic and he is a strong presence in front of the net.”

DEREK DAMON

Coach’s comments: “He has really emerged for us. He has become an impact player. He skates real well, he’s physically strong on his skates and he has real good hockey sense. He has really improved the defensive aspect of his game.”

Coach’s comments: “He makes an impact, physically, in every game he plays. He is very consistent with his physical presence. He has a good scoring touch. He is coming off knee surgery last spring, which has slowed down his progress skating-wise.”

JIMMY HOWARD

Coach’s comments: “He is coming off a great freshman year and he seems to have elevated his play. He has a real good presence in the net and he has a confident air about him. He anticipates extremely well, he’s very fluid in his movements, and he’s very strong in scramble situations.”
