BPW scholarships

BANGOR – The BPW-Maine Futurama Foundation, established by the Maine Federation of Business and Professional Women, offers three scholarships for Maine women.

Cathy Spencer, president of the Bangor BPW Club, and Julie Antworth, local BPW scholarship chairwoman, said that completed applications must be received by April 20 to be considered for the 2004-2005 school year. Each scholarship will provide $1,200 for school expenses. Applications are available at the guidance offices of area high schools, or Julie Antworth. Financial need and educational goals are important criteria in deciding how to award the scholarships.

The scholarships are:

. The Rachel E. Lemieux Youth Scholarship, given in memory of Rachel Lemieux of Augusta, awarded to a high school senior or recent graduate who will attend college in the fall of 2004.

. The Continuing Education Scholarship, awarded to a woman whose post-secondary education is in progress. An applicant must have completed at least one year of an accredited college or training program and must enroll for at least one year to complete the educational program.

. The Career Advancement Scholarship, awarded to a woman 30 years of age or older, enrolled in an accredited college or training program.

Application and supporting documents may be sent to Julie Antworth, 1453 Union St., Bangor 04401, or call 947-4915 for more information.

Colleges

New England School of Communication

BANGOR – It was a once in a lifetime trip for 11 audio engineering students at the New England School of Communications as they used the October class break to attend the annual convention of the Audio Engineering Society at Jacob Javitts Center in New York City.

The students, juniors and seniors in the NESCom program, met the giants of the audio engineering profession, including the author of their classroom textbook, David Moulton, recording star Les Paul, the inventor of the multi-track tape recorder. Paul invented the recorder for his close friend singer Bing Crosby, and used it to add echo effects to partner Mary Ford’s voice.

At the convention, attended by 15,000 people, the students had an opportunity to try out the latest equipment for recording and talked with industry pros on such topics as how to find employment and how to work with musicians. They also attended seminars on best industry practices and the future of the industry.

Keynote speaker and producer Arif Mardin told attendees that enhancing an artist’s voice is acceptable as long as the talent shines through.

David MacLaughlin, director of NESCom facilities and the audio program, accompanied the group to the convention.
