Interstate surpasses rail

The reason we no longer have a functional rail system is that it was not very efficient in the first place. Its lack of service is pretty much the norm. If we had to depend on rail service for timely delivery of goods we would be in deep trouble.

Since the advent of the Interstate highway system in the ’50s and ’60s, towns that had been bypassed by the railroads have flourished. Our produce is delivered fresh year-round from coast to coast because of the trucking industry. No longer do people have to stand around shabby railroad stations for hours waiting for trains. Because of the Interstate system we have freedom of movement like no other country.

I would plead with the powers that be to hurry up and build four more lanes in the New Hampshire-to-Augusta corridor and extend I-95 to Fort Kent so that maybe we could get some good roads going to the other Maine – Washington County.
