Winning record motivates Bears Husson, MMA seeking first wins

The University of Maine looks to bounce back from a crushing defeat, Husson College and Maine Maritime Academy are gunning for their first victories, and Colby College seeks to wrap up the CBB series title, highlighting today’s football games involving Maine colleges.

Maine (5-4) at Morgan State (5-4), 1 p.m., Baltimore, Md.

The Black Bears are out of the postseason picture, but they can still finish 8-4 by winning their last three games. Today, they encounter a nonleague opponent in Morgan State out of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

UMaine really got its offense rolling in the first half last week against Delaware and turned in one of its most balanced efforts of the season. Tailback Marcus Williams ranks 18th nationally with 115 rushing yards per game.

Freshman QB Ron Whitcomb continues to improve, having passed for 1,579 yards and 14 TDs without being intercepted in the last four contests. Heading up the receiving corps are Ryan Waller (43 receptions, 418 yds., 4 TDs) and Christian Pereira (28 rec., 443 yds., 7 TDs).

Morgan State has given up only 107 rushing yards per game, but has allowed a league-high 208 ypg through the air. The MSU Bears are led by linebacker Vincent Brown, who has made 83 tackles.

UMaine enters the game with the sixth-ranked defense in Division I-AA against the run (95.4 ypg). Linebackers Fred Lazo (59 tackles) and Jermaine Walker (57) and safety Brandon McGowan (57) are key men.

Morgan State has put up 339 ypg with a balanced offense spearheaded by platooned QBs LeJo Washington and Bradshaw Littlejohn, who have combined to rush for 95 ypg while throwing for 142 ypg. Tommie Manus (34 rec., 526 yds., 4 TDs) is the top receiving threat.

The Bears must shore up their special teams, including the kick coverage and field goal units, which struggled last week.

Husson (0-6) at Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham (0-8), 1 p.m., Madison, N.J.

Coach Gabby Price’s Braves want to end their inaugural season on a positive note with a victory against the Devils.

Husson was idle last week and hits the road for the fourth time in seven games. The Braves must overcome the fact FDU-Florham is playing the first game on its brand-new field.

Husson has been unable to get its offense rolling and have its defense hold the line at the same time. The Braves need to put it all together against the Devils, who have struggled offensively this season.

Framingham State (0-8) at Maine Maritime (0-8), noon, Ritchie Field, Castine

The Mariners can take the edge off a long, frustrating season by ending it with a victory over the Rams.

MMA has put up some impressive offensive numbers behind fullback Don Thibodeau of Shawmut (122 ypg) and QB Pat Bard of Winslow (97 ypg), the Nos. 5 and 9 rushers, respectively in the New England Football Conference.

The Mariners have been forgiving on defense, but Framingham ranks last in the league with only 169 ypg.

Colby (4-3) at Bowdoin (1-7), noon, Whittier Field, Brunswick

Bragging rights to the Colby-Bates-Bowdoin series crown are on the line in this one. The White Mules have mustered enough offense to win four games and have played well defensively all season.

The Polar Bears have managed only one win, but this rivalry often defies the odds and season tendencies.
