WINDHAM – The Mount Ararat boys needed penalty kicks. The Mount Ararat girls had just one early goal. But it turned out to be enough for both teams as the Eagle soccer squads each posted 1-0 victories to claim the Class A state championships Saturday at the Windham High field.
The Eagle boys played through a scoreless regulation and four scoreless 10-minute overtime periods but edged Scarborough 4-2 in the first round of penalty kicks.
The Eagle girls got a first-half goal from Kyla Woodhouse to edge Greely of Cumberland Center.
In the boys game, Kyle LeDuc, Andy Cantrell, Adam Gadbois, and Tyler Simpson all put in their penalty kicks for the Eagles.
Pete McHugh and Andrew Litchfield made penalty kicks for the Red Storm.
Colin Meyn earned the win in goal for the Eagles, while Scarborough’s Tim Martinson took the loss.
In the girls game, Woodhouse scored 13 minutes, 26 seconds into the first half. Erika Stupinski assisted on the winner for 15-3-1 Mount Ararat.
Eagles goalie Jessica Stahl faced five Greely shots. Molly Hamel was in net for the loss as Greely wrapped up at 14-2-2.
