With my relocation to Machias a major consideration was how to become a contributing member of the community. I was introduced to the Women’s Forum.

At a September dinner meeting of the Women’s Forum, a presentation was given by a volunteer from Down East Hospice. This idea resonated with me. I called and was accepted into the volunteer training program.

As an educator for the greater part of my life, I appreciated the outstanding organization and presentation of the materials provided. What became clear during the five full days of training was the great work that is offered to Washington County and how little it is used. This possibly is because the community is unaware of its existence.

The DEH is here to be of service to those who are terminally ill and for their families and caregivers. Some of what the volunteers can do is to just be there so that the client is not alone. They can relieve the caregiver so he or she can have a little more time for themselves. The volunteer can drive the client to the doctor or pharmacy. The volunteer can read to the client, write letters, do dishes or dust. We are there to be of service.

I was deeply moved when the director described a client’s need to have the winter wood supply stacked. She called a local high school and asked if there might be any students who would choose to offer such a service to a family in need. A group showed up on the weekend and with youthful vigor accomplished the job.

I would like to alert Washington County to this outstanding service that is available to those in need of comfort and support. More information about services is available at 454-7521, ext. 126. I feel abundantly blessed that I have found a way to be a contributing member of my new hometown.
