Miles for Smiles

Oral health is a big issue in Maine, especially for children. Many families can’t afford regular dental care and a shortage of dentists in rural areas compounds the problem. That’s where the Miles for Smiles program comes in. A collaboration between Penobscot Community Health Center and Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Miles for Smiles brings oral health care services, including education, to children in a fully equipped mobile dental center.

Miles for Smiles was launched Oct. 27, at Penobscot Community Health Care Center, 1012 Union St. Ceremonies included remarks by Gov. John Baldacci, health center professionals and Anthem officials; a floss cutting; and tours of the 42-foot-long custom-built mobile dental center.

Campaign of Hope success

Eastern Maine Medical Center’s Campaign of Hope, initiated by a challenge grant from Galen and Suzanne Cole, has raised more than $1.24 million for advanced cancer detection and treatment services at CancerCare of Maine and the Breast and Osteoporosis Center.

At a recent dedication ceremony, members of the EMMC Auxiliary were cited for their unwavering commitment to women’s health. The auxiliary contributed $400,000 to the campaign for the purchase of Digital Mammography II, which will be offered at the Eastern Maine Healthcare Mall on Union Street. Auxiliary President Pauline Rock congratulated members and said, “We are proud to make this gift in honor of the thousands of volunteer hours provided each year through the EMMC gift shop and special projects sponsored by the auxiliary.”

Rock unveiled a plaque that reads: “This center is dedicated to the EMMC Auxiliary in celebration of its volunteers.”
