Man turns himself in on drug charge

Brewer police summoned a Dedham man after he allegedly picked up somebody else’s prescription drugs.

Officer Jeff Gotreau said that on Nov. 7, a local pharmacy called police saying a woman had come in to pick up her prescription. The pharmacy said a man had already picked the drugs up the day before, claiming he had authority to do so.

Gotreau said the man had signed for the drugs, and was himself a customer at the pharmacy.

On Tuesday, Nov. 11, Gotreau said, Michael Kashey, 24, came to the police station and admitted picking up the medication without permission. He said he had taken most of it himself and traded the rest.

Gotreau summoned Kashey for a felony charge of acquiring drugs by deception.

Bangor police charged two men with assault following a ruckus at the Eastern Maine Medical Center emergency room early Wednesday.

Officer Brad Hanson reported that at about 2 a.m. he went to EMMC for a report of a patient assaulting staff. He arrived to find one man already in the custody of Officer Ed Mercier.

A doctor told Hanson that at about half past midnight, Roger Young, 53, of Charleston arrived at the emergency room with his wife and brother, complaining of chest pain. The doctor said that while Young was undergoing initial tests, he began demanding narcotics. The doctor told Young that he had already been prescribed medication and began to walk away.

The doctor said Young then communicated that he was refusing treatment, so the doctor began to remove the blood pressure cuff from Young’s arm. The doctor said Young then punched him in the stomach.

The doctor said he pushed Young away. Young’s brother Steve Haskell, 43, of Corinth, then entered the room, hitting the doctor in the head and shoulders. The doctor said hospital staff then came in to subdue the men.

A technician told Hanson that while he helped the doctor restrain Haskell, Young hit him in the back. The technician said he pinned Young against a bed to protect himself and other staff.

Hanson said that Mercier took Haskell to Penobscot County Jail, where he was charged with assaulting a medical provider. Hanson said the doctor was concerned that Young wouldn’t complete his medical tests. Young was eventually admitted to the cardiac unit.

Hanson summoned Young for assault. He left EMMC after hospital staff told him they did not consider Young a threat.

Pittsfield police are investigating the possible theft of chickens from a brooding facility on Eelweir Road overnight Wednesday.

Officer Marty Cochran said that because a lock was faulty, the barn containing 90,000 chickens was left unlocked Tuesday night and when owner David Gower went to the barn early Wednesday, it appeared someone had backed a truck up to the door.

Tire tracks were visible in soft ground, said Cochran, as well as a substantial quantity of feathers in the area.

Because of the large number of chickens being raised in cages, Cochran said Gower was unable to determine how many, if any, chickens had been taken.

Pittsfield police also have made three recent arrests. They include:

. Christopher Thornley, 28, of Pittsfield, charged with violating conditions of his probation disallowing alcohol consumption. He was arrested by Officer Jeff Vanadestine.

. Derek Averill, 28, of Pittsfield, was charged with violating the conditions of his probation by failing to report. He was arrested by Officer Vanadestine.

. Joshua Trask, 24, of Pittsfield, was charged with operating under the influence of intoxicants, criminal speed of 83 miles per hour in a 45 mph zone on Peltoma Avenue, and possession of marijuana. He was arrested by Officer Rodney Minoty.
