Capacitor performers to teach dance classes

Late this week, I received a call from Jane Bragg of the Thomas School of Dance in Bangor, who wanted to be sure area dancers are aware that several classes will be offered in the next few days by members of Capacitor.

The San Francisco-based performance group, which includes Bangor native Alexander Zendzian, will present “Within Outer Spaces,” at 8 tonight, at the Maine Center for the Arts in Orono.

Through the sponsorship of the MCA Outreach Program, a free Capacitor dance master class will be taught from 10:30 a.m. to noon today, at the Thomas School of Dance, 14 State St. in Bangor.

This class is for intermediate and advance ballet, jazz and modern dance students, Bragg explained.

Juggling will be taught 1-2 p.m.; modern dance 2:30-3:30 p.m.; contact improvisation, 3:30-4:30 p.m. and introduction to Brazilian dance, 4:30-6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16, at the school.

The schedule continues with juggling at 3:30-4:30 p.m.; contact improvisation at 4:30-5:30 p.m. and Brazilian at 5:30-7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 17, at the same site.

The final classes are modern, 4-5:30 p.m. and Brazilian, 7:30-9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, also at Thomas School of Dance.

Bragg said the fees for these classes are $15 for one class, $25 for two classes, $30 for three classes and $40 for four or more classes, but stressed some scholarships are available so that all who wish to take the classes can do so.

Jan Cox reports the Brewer Garden and Bird Club will hold a food sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at Marden’s in Brewer.

“Not only do we grow beautiful veggies and flowers, but we do a pretty good job in the kitchen, too, so we hope lots of ladies and gents will visit us there,” Cox wrote.

Proceeds will benefit the club’s summer projects within the city.

The second in the Magic Lamp Movie series is “Hook,” at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16, at Kalen Street Music Hall, formerly the Methodist church, on Main Street in Winterport.

Admission is $4 for adults and $10 for families.

It is expected that the series of family movies will continue through the winter, with the intent that any profits will benefit the establishment of a Winterport Arts Center.

Dr. Mark Sargent, provost of Gordon College in Wenham, Mass., will discuss the History of Thanksgiving at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16, at Bangor Museum and Center for History, 6 State St.

Sargent will describe the creation of the holiday and the development of traditions we still observe.

Admission is free and reservations can be made by calling the museum, between noon and 4 p.m. today at 942-1900.

Writing on behalf of Hampden Academy Project Graduation 2004, Gwen Cushing reports that the organization is holding a Dinner Buffet Fund-raiser with two seatings, one at 5 p.m. and the other 6:15 p.m. Monday, Nov. 17, at the Oriental Jade Restaurant in Bangor.

Members of the Class of 2004 will be your servers, and tickets are $12 for adults, $6 for children age 12 or under.

Proceeds will enable class members to enjoy a chemical-free party after their graduation next spring, at Alfond Center in Waterville.

The third annual “Free the Z to Help Feed the Needy” begins at 6 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, at the Brewer Shopping Center.

John Easton and Cori Skall of the Z-103.7 “Morning Show with John & Cori” will take up temporary residence in the shopping center parking lot, and will remain there until 1,000 turkeys have been donated to Manna Ministries of Bangor for its Thanksgiving distribution.

Members of the public can either drop off a turkey, or donate $15 per turkey, to help feed the needy this Thanksgiving.

The Trenton Historical Society is conducting a raffle courtesy of Carroll Leland, owner of Carroll’s IGA in Trenton.

Leland donated three gift certificates, redeemable at the store for $100, $50, and $25.
