Maine Heat advances to World Team semis

HALIFAX, Nova Scotia – Shawn Morrison had a strong performance Friday as the Maine Heat won the Pelham Electric Division title and earned a spot in the semifinals of the World Team Candlepin Bowling Championship at Halifax Fairlanes Bowling Center.

Shawn Morrison, the knockout champion, led the Maine Heat with a 134.48 average, second highest for the tournament, and a high single of 181.

All Saints/Park Place Lanes of New Hampshire won the Holiday Inn Express Division and also earned a spot in today’s semifinals.

The Maine Heat finished with a total pinfall of 21,005 to easily beat runner-up Line-M-Up of Hanover, Mass., by 213 pins.

Today’s champion will earn $10,000 while the runner-up receives $5,000. The final match is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.

Chris Sargent led All Saints/Park Place Lanes with a high tournament average of 136.3, and the second high single of 178. He also had the second high triple with 467.

In the first round of the playoffs, the New Hampshire All Stars defeated O’Brien’s Shoot Pub 1946 to 1733. New Hampshire was lead to victory by Mark Gregory (404) and Gary Santora (431).

MacLaughlin’s Truck and Trailer of Halifax defeated Handi’s Rebels of New Brunswick 1885 to 1801. MacLaughlin’s lost the first string by 75, but stormed back by beating their opponents by a whopping 145. They were lead by Chris Hollett’s 168, who had a 441 triple (122-168-151).

Maria’s Sub of Scituate, Mass., defeated Total Chaos, 1887 to 1753. Billy Travers lead Maria’s Pub with 140-114-175.

Line-M-Up of Hanover, Mass. had a 1893 to defeat Beazley’s Lanes of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, who had a 1805. John Zappi had a 418 for Line-M-Up.

Vacationland Bowling Center of Saco finished 10th in the Pelham Electric Division with a 36-52 record and 20,103 pins. In the Holiday Inn Express Division, Mid-Coast Maine of Rockland was ninth with a 40-48 record and 19,571 pins as Getchell Brothers Ice of Brewer was 24-64 with 19,171 pins.
