Millinocket man_arrested in thefts

MILLINOCKET – Police have arrested a local 20-year-old man for two burglaries on Wednesday and a third in September where a total of $40,000 in cash was stolen.

Jason Cummings was arrested Wednesday night and made his initial appearance Thursday in Penobscot County District Court where he pleaded not guilty.

Details were limited as the investigation is still under way, but Cummings was picked up on the charges Wednesday evening, according to Millinocket Police Chief Carlton Jones. Both of Wednesday’s burglaries happened during the afternoon when Cummings allegedly broke into two unoccupied homes and stole large amounts of cash, Jones said. The burglaries were reported later that afternoon when the residents returned to their homes, he said.

Police have also charged Cummings with a similar home burglary in September where a large amount of cash also was stolen, Jones said. The total from the three burglaries was $40,000 in cash, he said.

Jones couldn’t say whether more people were involved. Detective Aaron Brooker is heading the investigation and was assisted by Jones, Detective Jon Glidden, Sgt. Don Bolduc and Officer Jerry Cox.

Cummings was indicted on criminal threatening charges earlier this year and sentenced to 364 days in jail with all but 60 days suspended, and one year of probation, according to court records.
