Santa’s helper update

Many of those who benefit from donations to the Santa’s Helper Fund struggle day by day to feed, clothe and provide for their families.

Christmas is an especially difficult time for these families, according to The Salvation Army, because children often don’t understand their family’s financial situation. Salvation Army Maj. Debbie Burr has shared some of the letters accompanying applications for assistance. Here are some excerpts:

“I have an 8-year-old daughter and am on disability which is our only income. It leaves very little after rent and utilities. So any help you can give would be much appreciated.”

“After paying monthly bills, there is no money left. My girls enjoy opening presents.”

“I hope for assistance so that both my children will have a wonderful Christmas.”

“I’m on a fixed income due to a disability and I can’t afford to get much for my children after paying the bills. It means so much for me to see their faces light up on Christmas and to see them get something they really wanted. It hurts me that I can’t give them a big Christmas. They don’t ask for much and they really appreciate everything they get even if it’s underwear or $1.00 store stuff, that’s why I like to get stuff for them because they do appreciate even the little things and homemade things. Thank you very much for the light you bring on Christmas.”

Donations may be sent to Santa’s Helper Fund, P.O. Box 1329, Bangor 04402-1329.

Donors’ names and dollar amounts will be published in the Santa’s Helper column daily. Donors who wish to remain anonymous will be listed as such. Thank you in advance for your generosity.
