PORTLAND – An internal investigation has been launched into the death of a woman after she was arrested and brought to the Cumberland County Jail, Sheriff Mark Dion said Monday.

Elaine McGeehan, 23, of Sebago, died after being arrested Sunday night on a domestic violence assault charge, Dion said.

McGeehan was in medical distress after the 45-minute trip to the jail in Portland, the sheriff said.

Shortly after arriving at the jail she stopped breathing, and deputies and paramedics were unable to revive her, Dion said. McGeehan was taken to Maine Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

The woman was arrested after her mother called police to report her daughter was out of control. The family said medical help was requested when police were contacted, but it was not provided.

An autopsy will be performed. The death is under investigation by the Attorney General’s Office, the Maine State Police and Sheriff’s Department.
