Junior Classical League

HAMPDEN – On Friday, Nov. 21, 425 Latin students from 15 schools throughout Maine will gather at Hampden Academy to celebrate the Classics. The Classics include the study of the cultures, peoples, histories and languages of ancient Greece and Rome.

The students, members of the Maine Junior Classical League, more commonly known as Latin Club, hold two statewide conventions yearly. Hampden Academy will host the fall convention because MEJCL’s current president is Dan LoPotro, a senior at Hampden Academy.

Classics students participate in a variety of activities at conventions, including tests on Latin grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, mythology, and Roman history and culture. Students team up to compete in certamen, a quiz game similar to “Jeopardy” that tests students on their knowledge of Latin and the classical world. Students compete by level of Latin.

This year’s spirit theme is “Interdum feror cupidine magnarum partium Europae vincendarum,” meaning, “Sometimes I just get this urge to conquer large parts of Europe.”

Spirit festivities include a cheering competition and “Roman Idol” contest. This year’s Fall Convention promises to be the ultimate toga party, organizers said.

Brewer High School

BREWER – Eighty-five musicians from Brewer High School, under the directions of Brady Harris and Heather MacLeod, will go to Virginia next spring to compete in a national music festival.

Fund-raising projects are being scheduled to help make the trip possible:

. Businesses may advertise in the four concert programs given to the audience, averaging about 500 people. The musicians will speak with individual businesspeople about advertising.

. Holiday CDs are available for purchase.

Keep Bangor Beautiful

BANGOR – Keep Bangor Beautiful has announced winners in its Spectacular Secondhand Scarecrows contest. Winners received $100 prizes; others received ribbons. Some prizes were not awarded.

Eastern Nazarene College

QUINCY, Mass. – Ashlee Page of Hermon has been inducted into the Eastern Nazarene College Honors Scholar Society. She is a freshman studying elementary education.

University of Maine

ORONO – The public is invited to join Gov. John Baldacci and other distinguished citizens for a groundbreaking ceremony at 9:30 a.m. today to expand the Advanced Engineered Wood Composites Center, near Jenness Hall on the University of Maine campus.

Construction of an additional laboratory is planned. The expansion is funded by a bond referendum passed June 10. The project will provide manufacturing space and a temperature- and humidity-controlled composites fabrication lab which will be useful for innovation in Maine’s boat, shipbuilding and construction industries.

Memorial service

ORONO – A memorial service honoring the life of Laurence A. Jones Jr., a 1992 University of Maine graduate, will be held at noon today near North Stevens Hall in front of the Laurence A. Jones Jr. Memorial Tree.

At the time of his death, Jones’ mother, Yong C. Jones, established a scholarship in memory of her son. This year’s recipient will be announced at the memorial service.

Boulder Bash

ORONO – The second annual Boulder Bash competition will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, at the MaineBound Adventure Center on the University of Maine campus. Entry fees are $10 for current UMaine students and $20 for others. Participants will receive a T-shirt. Call the UMaine Campus Recreation office at 581-1794 for more information.

School book fair

BANGOR – Penobscot Christian School has scheduled God’s World book fair for Dec. 1-5 at the school on Ohio Street.

The public is welcome to attend the book fair during school hours. Books and products chosen for sale have been reviewed from a biblical perspective. For information, call 947-2704.
