BANGOR – An Embden man was sentenced to 13 months in prison on federal charges of possessing unregistered firearms. The sentence, handed down Friday in U.S. District Court in Bangor, will be followed by three years of supervised release.

On June 9, Alfred Clough, 61, pleaded guilty to five counts of possessing unregistered machine guns and one count of possessing unregistered destructive devices.

According to court records, on Sept. 18, 2002, Clough gave a machine gun to a witness, who in turn gave the machine gun to police. On Sept. 19, 2002, police executed a search warrant on Clough’s residence and seized another seven machine guns in various stages of construction, as well as grenade shells and components.

Evidence revealed that Clough used the garage on his property as a metalworking shop to make and repair firearms, including machine guns. He had no firearms registered to him in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record.
