ORONO – University of Maine senior left wing Meagan Aarts’ second goal of the game and 100th career point gave the Black Bears their first-ever victory over the Friars, 3-2 on Sunday afternoon at Alfond Arena.

Providence had won Saturday afternoon’s game 2-1 to extend its career edge over the Bears to 12-0-2.

On Sunday, Aarts snapped a 2-2 tie by converting the rebound of a Morgan Janusc shot on the power play with 6:22 remaining.

Kelli Halcisak had staked Providence to a lead with the only goal of the first period on the power play but Cheryl White and Aarts scored 2:15 apart in the second period to supply Maine with a 2-1 lead.

Rush Zimmerman tied it up with 9:26 remaining but Aarts collected her game-winner 3:04 later.

Lara Smart made 30 saves and Janusc had two assists for Maine, which is now 4-6-2 overall and 3-1 in Hockey East.

Jana Bugden made 16 saves for 3-4-2 Providence (1-1-1 in Hockey East).

There were 22 minor penalties.

On Saturday, Halcisak’s five-on-three goal at the 11:04 mark of the middle period proved to be the game-winner.

Zimmerman’s shorthanded goal gave Providence a 1-0 lead in the first period but Sonia Corriveau equalized 4:47 later.

Zimmerman also assisted on Halcisak’s goal and Amy Quinlan made 16 saves.

Smart turned aside 33 shots.

Women’s Basketball

So. Maine wins Webber tourney

At Farmington on Sunday, Jen Webster scored 15 points and grabbed 14 rebounds as the University of Southern Maine defeated the University of Maine at Farmington 89-54 in the championship game of the Webber Energy Tournament.

Tiffany Jones added 12 points for the 2-0 Huskies, while Meg Cressler had 11 points and four assists and Katie Frost and Donna Cowing each scored 10 points.

Kari Simpson led 1-1 UMF with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

The Coast Guard Academy won Sunday’s consolation game, defeating the University of Maine at Presque Isle 64-35 behind 15 points and 10 rebounds by Lis Bosma. Erica McGary led UMPI with 13 points and six rebounds.

USM advanced to the final with a 66-28 win over Coast Guard on Saturday. Katie Sibley and Frost each had 11 points for the winners, while Webster scored 10.

UMF defeated UMPI 65-29 on Saturday, as Simpson had 15 points and seven rebounds and Karen Sirois had 14 points, six rebounds and five assists.

McGary led UMPI with eight points, while Sarah Nason had a game-high 12 rebounds.

Colby wins two

At Waterville, the Colby White Mules captured the Colby Tip-Off Tourney by virtue of a 76-63 win over Newbury on Saturday and a 67-42 romp of Husson on Sunday.

On Saturday, Sarah Kelly led the Mules with 25 points while Megan Davis had 11. Wendy Bonner notched 10 points and 12 rebounds while Kate Emery had 10 also.

Randi Hardiman’s 18 point-10 rebound effort led Newbury.

On Sunday, Bonner scored 14 and Kelly 13 to give the Mules the tournament title.

Annie McIntosh led the Braves of Bangor with 14 points.

Maine Maritime drops two

At Boston, the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners lost a pair of games over the weekend at the Emanuel College tourney, 85-71 to the hosts on Saturday and 88-52 to Lehman College of New York in Sunday’s consolation game.

In Saturday’s game, Bobby Brown tossed in 20 points to spark Emanuel.

Jason Brown added 12 for the winners.

Matt Clement chalked up 30 points and 19 rebounds for Maine Maritime of Castine. Marc McCorrison had 13 and Adam LeClair 10.

In Sunday’s game, Miguel Jorge registered 15 points to lead Lehman College to victory.
