North Berwick man, pleads guilty, gets 10 years in Eddington break-in, assault

BANGOR – A York County man was sentenced Monday to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty in Penobscot County Superior Court to charges in connection with a break-in and assault this summer at an Eddington apartment.

Lance M. Palmer, 34, of North Berwick pleaded guilty to two counts of burglary, aggravated assault, assault and violating probation. Palmer’s probation on a York County conviction also was revoked Monday, and he was sentenced to one year on that charge.

Palmer and Douglas Clifford, 38, of Swanville were arrested in July shortly after the alleged incident. Both were indicted in August on two counts of burglary, aggravated assault and assault.

Clifford’s probation revocation hearing was continued until next week, according to Penobscot County Deputy District Attorney Michael Roberts, but Clifford admitted violating his probation. He has not entered a plea on the charges, but the matter is scheduled for trial in December, Roberts said Monday.

Four men entered an apartment building on Route 9 about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 8, looking for a man named Lee, according to Roberts. They struck one man with a hammer before fleeing when the men learned the police had been called.

Jeffrey Simpson, 38, of Newburgh and Michael Gleason, 38, of Bangor also have been arrested in connection with the incident as well as a robberies in Newport and on Birch Street in Bangor.

Simpson was arrested last month in Portland after firing a gun inside a bar.

Gleason was arrested at gunpoint Oct. 16 in the Newburgh area. In addition to his alleged involvement in the Eddington incident, Gleason has been charged with three robberies, three burglaries and aggravated assault.

He has an extensive criminal history, according to police, and has been implicated in the armed robbery of Lucky’s Tavern in Newport on Sept. 21, where an employee handed over $2,500 at knife point.
