DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The University of Maine men went on a 9-0 run just over two minutes into the second half to erase a six-point deficit, retake the lead, and never trail the rest of the way en route to a 68-63 basketball victory over Bethune-Cookman College Monday night.
Four different players scored in the decisive run, including game high-scorer Kevin Reed.
Reed led the 1-1 Black Bears with 17 points. He also had six rebounds and four steals. Another standout performance came from forward David Dubois. The 6-foot-9 junior hit five of six shots from the field and all four attempts from the free-throw line for 12 points. He also grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds and made two steals in a solid effort against Pape Ba, the all-conference forward for Bethune-Cookman.
Bangor’s Joe Campbell had 13 points and eight rebounds to help the Bears outrebound a bigger Wildcats team 36-30 overall. Point guard Eric Dobson had eight points and a game-high eight assists.
Maine shot a sizzling 52.4 percent from the field in the second half and 49 percent for the game. The Wildcats went from 48.3 percent in the first half to 29 percent in the second as Maine exerted stifling defensive pressure.
Reed hit a basket with 49.3 seconds to play to push Maine ahead 62-58 after Bethune-Cookman sliced an eight-point lead to only two points. Campbell nailed four straight free throws for Maine in the next 30 seconds to help put the game out of reach.
Markey Picard led the 0-1 Wildcats with 14 points and Dajuan Clayton chipped in with 11. Ba was limited to four points on 2-for-4 shooting.
