ORONO – Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece, “The Nutcracker,” presented by the Bangor Symphony Orchestra and the Robinson Ballet Company, is a 19-year tradition in the Bangor region. With new choreography, guest dancers, beautiful scenery and costumes, officials said, the community will be enchanted by the ballet, performed by professional dancers with live music.
Performing one of the most anticipated scenes of the ballet are Rebecca Breau and Ian Robinson, former members of Robinson Ballet, in the roles of the Sugarplum Fairy and the Cavalier in the Pas De Deux.
Currently, they attend New York University Tisch School of the Arts. Trained in Bangor, they are two of 30 freshmen in the undergraduate program who were chosen out of scores of applicants to attend NYU.
Jessica Speed of Millinocket will perform the role of Clara this year. Stevie Dunham and Caleb McGary will perform the roles of the Snow Queen and Snow Prince. Sam Swanton is the Nutcracker Prince. Other special guests include the Bangor Area Children’s Choir, performing live on stage with 30 voices to conclude Act 1.
Six dance schools from around the state are represented in the Robinson Ballet Company production, including River City Dance Center in Bangor and Ellsworth; Thomas School of Dance, Bangor; Belfast Dance Studio; Studio 1, Millinocket; Broadway Bound, Lincoln; and the University of Maine.
A number of the dancers have studied in New York and Boston.
The Bangor Symphony-Robinson Ballet production is a holiday tradition in the Bangor region, performed in the 1,600-seat Hutchins Concert Hall at the Maine Center for the Arts.
The Nutcracker will be presented at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6; and 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, at the Maine Center for the Arts.
Tickets range from $22 to $29 for adults, $11 to $15 for youths under 18, and senior and group discounts are available. For reservations, call the Bangor Symphony Orchestra box office at 942-5555. More information is available at www.bangor symphony.com.
