WALDOBORO – A New York man was killed and his friend was injured Thanksgiving Day in a crash on Route 220 shortly after midnight.

Passenger Andrew Fisher, 22, of Bedford Hills, N.Y., died as a result of injuries from the accident, according to police Sgt. Michael Middaugh on Friday.

Fisher and the driver, Garrett Schilke, 21, of South Salem, N.Y., were both taken by ambulance to Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta, a hospital spokeswoman confirmed Friday. Fisher died at 2:05 a.m., Middaugh said.

The two men were in the area visiting family for the Thanksgiving holiday, the sergeant said.

Schilke was transferred from Miles to Maine Medical Center in Portland, according to the Miles spokeswoman. He was in fair condition late Friday, a Maine Medical Center spokeswoman said.

At approximately 12:20 a.m. Thursday, Schilke was driving a 2000 Ford Focus south on Route 220 toward Friendship when he lost control of the car and hit a tree broadside on the passenger side, police said.

The driver and passenger were wearing seat belts, but it is not yet known if alcohol or drugs were involved, Middaugh said. Speed was a factor in the crash, he said. Middaugh and Officer Jeff Fuller investigated the accident.
