I was shocked to find that Washington County has the highest number of working families living below the poverty level. I was under the impression the only poor people in the state live in Aroostook County.

You might think by the prices for gas and fuel that the people of Washington County were rolling in money and could afford to pay 15 cents more a gallon than other parts of the state. This summer it was cheaper in Van Buren for gas than in Calais. I wonder why?

I know the state has run at least two investigations into price gouging in the last 10 years, with the conclusion that there was none, so that isn’t the answer.

Would someone please enlighten us as to why?
