A great choice

I’ve read your recent articles concerning the choice of John Winkin as the new head baseball coach at Husson College. Tom Brokaw in his book about the “Greatest Generation” could well have been writing about a man like John Winkin.

Coach Winkin started his coaching career at Dwight Morrow High School in Englewood, N.J. Coincidentally, at a private school in the same community, St. Cecilia’s High School, was a football coach by the name of Vince Lombardi. John and Vince were great friends, and other than sharing coaching philosophies frequently played bridge and golf. Aside from his baseball coaching, in the fall, John chose to coach a Pop Warner football team and among his many players was a young man by the name of Bill Parcells. Greatness always attracts greatness!

This little-known bit of history gives a snap-shot view of great coaches who love the game, love the young people who seek their expertise, love to have fun, and love to WIN. John Winkin is a great coach, and Husson is lucky to have him available.
