The upgrading of the John Winkin Baseball Complex and the football stadium at Husson College in Bangor continues as a lighted multipurpose facility moves toward reality.
Dan Ham, director of the Bangor-based school’s physical plant, said the foundation for the 3,000-plus bleacher seats is expected to be poured today.
“The structural steel for the seating should start being installed later this week. That will take around two and a half weeks,” said Ham. “The decking and seating itself will be done in the spring. That will take around four weeks.”
As for the lights, he said the “underground conduit” that will contain the wires is 90 percent complete.
“They may be able to put up the foundation and the poles this fall. But they may have to finish off the wiring in the spring,” said Ham.
However, he stressed that everything is contingent upon [good] weather.
He said there is a chance the Husson baseball team will be able to play night games in the spring but, if not, the lights and bleachers definitely will be operational for the Maine Lumberjacks’ Northeast League opener later in the spring.
The Lumberjacks played at the University of Maine’s Mahaney Diamond last season.
The FieldTurf football surface will be re-configured so the bleacher seats will be much closer to the field.
“We’re going to run the football field down the left-field line,” explained Ham.
This fall, the football field ran across the outfield from the left-field foul line to right field.
“We may have to move the left-field fence out a little bit,” said Ham. “A pretty good portion of the new seats will run between the 40-yard-lines.”
Aquino gains league award
Freshman left winger Luciano Aquino on Tuesday became the fourth University of Maine hockey player in two months to gain a league monthly honor when he was named the Hockey East Superskills Rookie of the Month for November. October winners from UMaine were Todd Jackson (player of the month) and Jimmy Howard and Frank Doyle (co-goaltenders of the month.)
Aquino had four goals and three assists in six games during November for the Black Bears, scoring his first collegiate goal at Boston College on Nov. 7 and two goals in a victory over Northeastern on Nov. 14. He had at least one point in five of the six games in which he played.
Maine, 10-2-1, returns to action Friday and Saturday when it visits Merrimack College in North Andover, Mass.
