Bangor

Breakfast with Santa

The Bangor YMCA Child Care Center will host Breakfast with Santa, 7:30-10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, in its upstairs center at 127 Hammond St. Guests will enjoy a pancake breakfast and make holiday crafts while visiting with Santa Claus.

Crafts made by YMCA participants will be on sale, and the opportunity for a photo with Santa will be available.

The cost for breakfast is $1 per person. Proceeds benefit Bangor YMCA Child Care and Youth & Family Programs.

Seasonal music with Sandi

Sandi Blanchette is a well-known piano and voice educator in eastern Maine, and a busy performer. Some may know her as something of a comic opera diva, playing many of the Hancock County Gilbert and Sullivan Society’s leading roles.

Blanchette, who has spent many hours over the years at the Bangor Public Library, will be treating the patrons and staff to seasonal music 1-3 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 24. The public is invited to attend.

Ability partnership forum

The Maine Ability Partnership of the Maine Department of Labor will hold a public forum 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, at the Bangor Career Center. The purpose of the forum is to gather information about access to career center services by people with disabilities.

“As part of the Maine Ability Partnership project, we are trying to identify barriers that individuals with disabilities may encounter in obtaining services from career centers,” said Shell Moore, the project’s coordinator. “This is an opportunity for the public to share their opinions on how the career center can better meet the needs of people with disabilities. Anyone interested in this issue is encouraged to attend.”

American Sign Language interpreters, real-time captioning and alternate text format for printed materials will be provided. Individuals who might need some other service in order to participate are encouraged to call Moore at (888) 755-0023 (TTY), (800) 698-4440 or e-mail shell.moore@maine.gov at least seven days in advance of the forum.

Gingerbread house contest

The culinary arts department at Eastern Maine Community College will hold its second annual Holiday Gingerbread House Competition to benefit the Make-a-Wish Foundation at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, at Rangeley Hall. The grand prize is a kayak donated by Old Town Canoe.

The public is invited to participate in the contest, take part in a raffle and view the gingerbread houses that will be on display. Those who enter the contest will be required to sell five books of raffle tickets to raise money for the charity. The tickets give purchasers a chance to win one of the gingerbread houses in the contest.

Lights of Remembrance

The St. Joseph Hospital Auxiliary invites the community to remember loved ones this holiday season by participating in the Lights of Remembrance program. A gift of $10 or more will provide a special ornament with a loved one’s name on it included on the Remembrance Tree in the hospital lobby.

A gift of $25 will provide a special ornament with a loved one’s name placed on the Remembrance Tree and a keepsake ornament.

A gift of $100 will provide a special ornament with a loved one’s name on the Remembrance Tree and a keepsake ornament annually.

All gifts are acknowledged in an album displayed in the hospital’s lobby.

Those who wish to purchase a Light of Remembrance should call the hospital’s public affairs office at 262-1720.

The public also is invited to a holiday celebration at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, at the hospital’s Broadway entrance. The event will include the lighting of the Remembrance Tree and holiday display, caroling, refreshments and a visit from Santa.

For the birds

Give your feathered friends the care they need. Bob Duchesne of the Maine Audubon Society will talk about the seasonal care and feeding of wild birds at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5, at Bangor Public Library.

Silent and live auctions

Peace through Interamerican Community Action will hold its 17th annual silent and live auction 6-9 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, at the University College of Bangor’s College Center ballroom, 210 Texas Ave.

The auction benefits PICA’s grass-roots social and economic justice programs, including the Bangor-El Salvador Sister City Project, the Bangor Clean Clothes Campaign and the Maine Fair Trade Campaign.

The auction is a community event offering donated items for bid such as:

. Clothes made with dignity.

. Artwork by local artists.

. Books by Maine authors.

. Crafts handmade by friends in the sister city of Carasque, El Salvador.

. Gift certificates and services, such as massages and landscape design.

Brewer

Kiwanis news

Kiwanis Lt. Gov. Billy Newberry and Secretary Herb Hopkins inducted Art Monk into Brewer Kiwanis recently.

Members Bill Newberry, Jane Newberry, Herb Hopkins and Andy McPhee attended the fall conference of the New England District of Kiwanis in North Conway, N.H. New England Gov. Carolyn Perry reported that more than $12,100 has been raised or pledged for the Camp Sunshine District Project. Workshops were held on various subjects and 172 Kiwanians and their guests attended.

The Newberrys, Hopkins and Dusty Fisher helped the American Red Cross with its blood drive Nov. 28.

The Brewer Key Club, sponsored by Brewer Kiwanis, collected 3,500 items for the food cupboard. Bell ringing for The Salvation Army and the children’s Christmas party are the next two projects.

Carmel

Tree-lighting ceremony

There will be a tree-lighting ceremony and Christmas carol sing-along at 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7, at the Simpson Memorial Library. Refreshments will be provided by the Carmel Congregational Church in the church basement, where Librarian Dixie Carr will read Christmas stories.

Orono

Women of the World

Women of the World will hold a holiday luncheon at noon Monday, Dec. 8, at the Church of Universal Fellowship, Main Street.

Host countries will be Germany and Austria, where many holiday traditions – including the Christmas tree – originated. A program about crafts of straw will be presented.

The meeting is open to American and international women. The cost for the lunch is $4, and there is no charge for small children who attend with their mothers. The menu includes lentil soup, traditional breads and sweets. To learn more about the organization and the luncheon, call Mireille Le Gal at 581-2905.

WOW welcomes women from all over the world to become acquainted and learn from each other’s cultures. Meetings are held usually the second Monday of each month, September through May. A different country or culture is featured each month.

Orrington

Covers for Christmas

The Orrington Public Library will feature “Covers for Christmas,” a special holiday project. Those planning to give a book for Christmas are invited to bring it to the library and staff members will put a protective plastic cover on books with dust jackets.

The service is free during regular library hours, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday; and 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, Dec 1 through 23.

During that time, the library also will conduct a “New and Nearly New” book sale. All books will be $3 each.

To celebrate the library’s 25 years of service to the town of Orrington, the library will serve refreshments 5-7 p.m. every Thursday in December. Fines will not be charged for overdue books returned during those hours.

Winterport

Willy Wonka movie

Magic Lamp Movies will present “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” at 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 14, at Kaler Street Music Hall, Main Street.

This is the third in the Magic Lamp Movie series. The series will continue throughout the winter, offering family movies once or twice a month in downtown Winterport, with the prospect of devoting any profits to establishing a Winterport Arts Center.

The next scheduled dates are Jan. 4, Feb. 1 and Feb. 15. Movies to be shown will be announced at a later time.
