Series, last meeting: Maine leads 41-8-4; Maine 6-2 on 10/30/03
Key players: Maine – RW Greg Moore (7 goals, 6 assists), RW Colin Shields (7 & 6), LW Todd Jackson (8 & 4), C Michel Leveille (0 & 12), D Prestin Ryan (3 & 5), G Jimmy Howard (4-1-1, 1.81 goals-against average, .925 save percentage), G Frank Doyle (6-1, 1.86, .922); Merrimack – LW Brent Gough (6 & 8), D Bryan Schmidt (3 & 9), C Marco Rosa (7 & 3), D Tony Johnson (1 & 9), LW Tim Reidy (5 & 2), C Steve Crusco (3 & 2), G Casey Guenther (3-7-3, 2.87, .899)
Outlook: Friday’s game is the 500th at the former Volpe Complex where Merrimack is 298-169-32. Merrimack has scored only 16 goals in nine HE games but the Warriors earned a recent 3-3 tie at Boston College and will be a handful at home. Maine must be thorough in the defensive zone because the Warriors have plenty of quick, gritty forwards. They are without injured forwards Derek Kilduff, Matt Johnson and Blake Stewart. Maine, which hasn’t played since Nov. 22, will try to get its power play untracked (2 for its last 34). Maine is the second-stingiest team in the country, allowing 1.85 goals per game. Merrimack has the nation’s No. 8 power play (22 percent) with 8 goals in its last 22 chances. Maine has the fifth-best penalty-killing percentage (88.7 percent).

Outlook: The Bears are back on the road for three games in seven days, including tonight’s clash. UMaine seeks more offensive consistency and better rebounding after averaging 58 ppg in the Dead River Classic. UWGB, the defending Horizon League champ, reached the second round of the NCAAs last season. The Phoenix graduated four starters while Tiffany Mor, this year’s top scorer, is out with a knee injury. UWGB has five other players scoring in double figures. The Bears’ defense was stingy last weekend (56.5 ppg) and should match up well against a guard-oriented UWGB squad with similar height and depth. The Phoenix, who are shooting 45 percent from 3-point range, have won 16 straight at home.
