Bangor man arrested in assault on teenage girl

A Bangor man was treated and then released from Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor on Saturday for an alleged self-inflicted stab wound, and then was arrested on charges of domestic assault.

Bangor police Officer William Lawrence arrested Scott Demmons, 22, on charges he assaulted his 17-year-old girlfriend, after Lawrence received a complaint of a family fight on Elm Street.

A neighbor of Demmons’ girlfriend called police after she ran away from Demmons, according to Lawrence’s report. Lawrence arrived at the neighbor’s home shortly after 6 p.m. Saturday and spoke with the girlfriend.

The girlfriend said that she and Demmons had broken up the night before and that Demmons had asked her to come to his High Street residence to discuss the break-up. She also said she was pregnant with Demmons’ baby.

The 17-year-old girl walked home from High Street after Demmons became upset. Demmons then followed her. Once he got to her Elm Street residence, he initiated another argument and tore a phone from her wall so she couldn’t call police, according to Lawrence’s report.

The girlfriend told Lawrence Demmons knocked pictures off a shelf and kicked a hole in a kitchen cabinet before grabbing a knife and stabbing himself in the leg. She said he ripped off her sweater, and then she fled to her neighbor’s residence.

When Lawrence arrived he found Demmons bleeding from his leg. Demmons was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center. Lawrence took pictures of the damage Demmons had allegedly done to his girlfriend’s apartment, but the officer observed no visible injuries on the girl.

Lawrence said Demmons had admitted that he punched the girlfriend in the face Friday night when the two had broken up.

Lawrence arrived at EMMC to find Demmons being released. The officer placed him under arrest for domestic assault and issued him a summons for criminal mischief and obstructing the report of a crime.

Demmons was released from Penobscot County Jail and ordered to have no direct contact with the girlfriend until his appearance in 3rd District Court on Jan. 12, 2004.

A University of Maine student was issued a summons for theft after a fire alarm evacuation of a residence hall on campus early Sunday morning.

Public Safety Officer Amy Nickerson and local firefighters responded to a call after two fire extinguishers were discharged at Hancock Hall. The residents were evacuated and taken to nearby Wells Conference Center to wait because of poor weather conditions.

When the students were let back into their hall, Nickerson witnessed several dining forks fall out of one student’s jacket. Nickerson suspected the forks were taken from Wells Conference Center and issued Brian Davenport, 18, a summons for theft.

Two University of Maine students were issued summonses for theft Saturday evening by Orono police Officer Jeff King after a store clerk flagged him down and reported the incident.

King was traveling on Stillwater Avenue in Orono when an employee from Stillwater One Stop motioned for him to stop. The clerk said a man had stolen a 30-pack of beer and a bottle of wine and gotten into a vehicle parked behind the store where another man was waiting in the driver’s seat.

King pursued the vehicle, which pulled over almost immediately into another parking lot on Stillwater Avenue. King said both the vehicle’s occupants, Joshua Jenkins, 19, of Hampden and Kevin Fox, 18, of Biddeford admitted to the theft.

King issued Jenkins and Fox summonses for theft and also issued warnings for criminal trespassing.
