BREWER – The defending Eastern Maine Class B champion Hampden Academy Broncos had hoped to get off to a good start in defense of their crown and they did Wednesday night.
Freshman left wing Kyle Weiland scored four goals and assisted on another; junior left wing Jason Huntley had a hat trick and junior center Kevin Brooks had five assists as the Broncos thumped youthful Old Town 14-1 at the T.J. Ryan Center.
Hampden Academy outshot Old Town 55-6 and the game was never in doubt after the Broncos solved Indian goalie J.P. Stowe for five goals in the final 4:57 of the first period.
Stowe had been nursing a groin injury and had to leave the game with 17 seconds left in the first period when he reaggravated it.
He was replaced by freshman Jason Trask.
Goals six seconds apart by junior defenseman Lance Ingerson and junior center Chris Pease broke a scoreless tie and Weiland’s goal 42 seconds later made it 3-0 before Weiland’s second goal and Matt Soucy’s score closed out the period.
Weiland said he never expected to have such a memorable debut.
“I’m happy. My teammates helped me out a lot. I couldn’t have done it without them,” said Weiland.
Ingerson’s game-opening goal came off a two-on-one with Steve Boutin after a Brooks check in the neutral zone freed the puck to Ingerson.
“Their defenseman did a good job covering [Boutin]. I saw an opening to the short side and shot it. He [Stowe] almost got it because his glove hit it. He played it perfectly. I didn’t think I was going to score,” said Ingerson.
Right off the center ice face-off, Pease scored off another two-on-one. He burst down the right wing and used Kevin Dunham as a decoy.
“I went around the defenseman and went short side with it,” said Pease.
“It’s nice to get off to a good start. It gives us a little bit of confidence,” said Pease.
Weiland expanded the lead to 4-0 by finishing off a nice passing play involving Ian Lee and Danny Mangano with a low 15-foot wrister inside the right post and then, 3:37 later, coming out of the corner and placing a point-blank wrister over Stowe’s glove. Soucy capped the flurry with a wrister from a difficult angle to Stowe’s right.
Huntley made it 6-0 in the second period before Chris St. Louis scored the Old Town goal, shorthanded, with a seven-foot backhander off a breakaway.
Dunham and Pease expanded the lead to 8-1 later in the second period before the Broncos received two third-period goals apiece from Weiland and Huntly and single goals from Boutin and Mangano.
“Penalties killed us. We took too many stupid penalties and our guys ran their mouths off,” said first-year Old Town coach Casey King, whose team was called for 14 minor penalties and two 10-minute misconducts.
Hampden was assessed eight minors and two 10-minute misconducts.
“I give Old Town a lot of credit. They never quit playing. They worked hard. Our kids did a good job moving the puck and skating,” said Broncos coach Tom King.
