GARDINER – Twenty-one Maine-based companies are the recipients of federal funding totaling more than $1.7 million, according to an announcement made Tuesday by U.S. Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins.

The technology grants awarded by the Maine Technology Institute in Gardiner will help improve biotechnology, precision manufacturing, information technology and environmental technology for the forestry, agriculture and aquaculture sectors.

The following Maine-based companies were awarded:

. $490,000 to Terralink Software Systems Inc. in Portland for TDX.

. $425,000 to IdealsWork Inc. in Portland for a pilot program for new investment technology.

. $414,612 to BIODE Inc. in Westbrook for a second-generation solid-state viscometer.

. $250,000 to Access Wellness Diagnostic Technologies in Bangor for a diagnostic device for soft tissue injury.

. $10,000 to SpiMark LLC in Portland for development of CRM software and IP protection plans.

. $10,000 to Ship Motion Associates in Portland for a gyroscopic stabilization system for small boats.

. $10,000 to MariCal in Portland for bioassays for osmoregulation of marine ornamentation.

. $10,000 to Tibbetts Industries Inc. in Camden for market research into remote power products.

. $10,000 to Fota Inc. in Saco for development of smartlites sensors.

. $10,000 to Wavetech Paddling Supplies in Rockland for development of a radar reflector to be used in marine safety.

. $10,000 to Maine Halibut Farms in Orono for a land-based halibut trial.

. $10,000 to SiteWatch Technologies LLC in Strong for patent application of the SiteWatch process.

. $10,000 to Fairchild Semiconductor in South Portland for prototype MEMS chips for testing at Sandia Labs.

. $9,976 to Tethys Research LLC in Bangor for development of enzyme-assisted pulping.

. $9,865 to Jakerstin Bracing Inc. in North Monmouth for an adjust-in masonry wall bracing system.

. $9,500 to Advanced Buckle Technology in Falmouth for the advanced buckle technology design project.

. $9,450 to Hodgdon Yachts Inc. in East Boothbay for preparation of a development award application.

. $9,275 to the C&H Corp. in South Portland for market research and patent protection.

. $8,100 to the Maine Distilleries in Paris for a feasibility study for Maine potato vodka distillation.

. $7,460 to the Rodco Enterprises Inc. in Lewiston for emergency response gear container development.

. $6,040 to Jeffrey Florman of Portland for stereotactic frames in brain surgery.
