Hampden ‘bubble’ collapses Workers clearing snow from sports complex

HAMPDEN – Volunteers were removing snow Tuesday night from the bubble that had covered Hampden’s Maine Sports Complex until it collapsed under the weight of the snow from Monday’s storm.

Financier, CEO and manager Pete Madigan blamed the collapse on the 20-inch snowfall, the swirling wind creating tall drifts and a weakened seam that had been slashed by vandals six weeks ago. The seam had been repaired but couldn’t contain the volume of the drifting snow.

Nobody was injured when the bubble collapsed.

“We won’t be able to assess the internal damage until the snow is cleared off,” said Madigan. “Hopefully, it will just be cosmetic.”

Madigan said he has conferred with Joe Burke of Joseph M. Burke and Son in Newburgh, the company that would repair the bubble, and he is in hopes “we can have it up again in three or four days.

“But we are working against time. The plastic will be less pliable the colder it gets,” said Madigan.

Madigan said repairing the bubble will require “a triple seam and possibly welding it.”

The 33,000-square foot Maine Sports Complex has been in existence for nearly two years and has been used for several activities including soccer and field hockey. The facility has a Sprinturf artificial grass surface.

Madigan said approximately 30 volunteers have donated their time and called the outpouring of support “tremendous.”

The postponed events will be rescheduled, he said.

The second annual Hamel Cup soccer tournament slated this weekend will be rescheduled if need be rather than moved to another venue according to Hermon High School boys soccer coach David Hamel.
