ORONO – There are few teams that can match up with the height of the Orono girls basketball team and 6-footers Marie Lint and Stacey Saucier.

Unfortunately for the Red Riots, the Hermon girls are one such squad.

The Hawks were strong inside and made some big shots from the perimeter to open up a 20-point lead in the third quarter and a 49-31 win.

Hermon grabbed 15 offensive rebounds compared to 10 for Orono. It wasn’t a huge advantage by the numbers, but the offensive boards translated into five put-backs for the Hawks.

Two of those came in the third quarter as Hermon stretched its 28-17 halftime lead.

“They’re one of the biggest teams we play and we’re pretty big, but we’re strong with what we do,” Hermon’s Shannon Wiggin said.

The Hawks scored quickly as Wiggin hit a short jumper to open the third. Stacey Saucier responded for the Riots with a basket off an inbounds pass from Kati Glencross, but Cassie White and Wiggin each put in an offensive rebound. After an Orono timeout, Wiggin made another jumper in the lane and Malerie Hall made a layup, drew a foul and hit the free throw for a 39-19 lead.

The Hawks stayed in man-to-man defense most of the game, with the 6-foot Hall and 5-10 Wiggin guarding Lint and Saucier.

The Riots picked up the pace and went on an 8-0 run in the fourth quarter as the Hawks struggled a bit with turnovers and two offensive fouls. Orono had cut into Hermon’s lead a bit, but after Hermon coach Margie Deabay called a timeout with 2:51 left in the game, Hall scored off a pass from Marissa McLeod and White had another put-back to put the game out of reach.

“We play really well when we slow things down,” senior point guard Shannon Dobbins said. “That’s the key. That’s where we really shine.”

Hall had 12 rebounds (six offensive). White, who is 5-9, finished with seven rebounds.

“We gave up way too many second shots,” Orono coach Tim Baude said. “We played well defensively but the second and third shots got us. … I was very proud of the girls tonight. This is one of the better teams we’re going to play and we stayed right with them.”

Paige Macdonald played well as a substitute for Dobbins, who got into foul trouble early. Macdonald scored 12 points, including six in the second quarter.

Her two field goals in that period were both long jumpers, which was key as the Red Riots went into a variation on a 2-3 zone to stop Hermon’s inside game. McLeod had a 3-pointer early in the quarter, too.

“We adjusted well to what they did,” Hall said. “We feel comfortable playing [against] a zone and man-to-man.”

Lint and Saucier each had five rebounds. Glencross had five assists.
