Old Town police summoned a Nova Scotia man after he allegedly high-beamed a police cruiser early Wednesday.

Officer Thomas Adams reported that at about 3 a.m. he was driving north on Stillwater Avenue when a car passed him at high speed heading south, without lowering its high beams. Maine law requires drivers to dim their headlights when following or passing another car.

Adams said he turned on his blue lights and stopped the car in the parking lot of the Irving gas station in Orono. He spoke with the driver, who appeared nervous, and gave the name “Patrick Knockwood.”

Adams said that when dispatch found no listing by that name in Bureau of Motor Vehicle files, the driver gave the name Patrick Phillips, 30, of Nova Scotia. Phillips had no driver’s license, Adams said.

Adams warned Phillips of the possible consequences of using a false name, then charged him with operating without a license.

Bangor police arrested a Massachusetts man after he allegedly drove through town with his lights out early Thursday.

Sgt. Thomas Reagan reported that at about 1:20 a.m. he saw a car turn from Main Street onto High Street with no headlights or taillights on. Reagan said he caught up to the car on State Street hill and activated his blue lights, but the driver did not respond.

Reagan said the car made an abrupt right turn onto French Street to avoid a stationary snow-removal truck, then parked on the left side of the street with its rear end sticking into the road.

Reagan said the driver, Robert Spencer, 57, of Bridgewater, Mass., had clumsy fingers and a strong smell of alcohol. Spencer admitted having three drinks. Reagan said Spencer performed poorly on sobriety tests, having difficulty with the instructions.

Reagan arrested Spencer and charged him with operating under the influence. He said he found a tin containing marijuana residue in Spencer’s pocket.

Bangor police arrested a man after he allegedly stole from Wal-Mart Tuesday afternoon.

Officer Rob Angelo reported that at about 5 p.m. he went to Wal-Mart on a report of a shoplifter. He spoke with Ivare Jones, 58, of Bangor, who admitted he had stolen some items including a razor and an air freshener.

Angelo said Jones told him he had stolen several times before without getting caught; Jones said he didn’t know why he did it.

Angelo summoned Jones for theft and removed him from the store.

Bangor police arrested a man Wednesday after he allegedly hit his wife in the eye with a broom.

Officer Ed Mercier reported that he and Officer Chad Foley went to a home in Bangor, where a woman was staying who said she feared her husband was out to hurt her.

The woman said she took her 2-month-old child and went to a friend’s house because her husband, William McKee, 35, of Bangor, was drinking and typically became abusive while drunk, according to Mercier. She said McKee had threatened to hurt her if she left.

Mercier said he noticed the woman’s right eye was red and her eyelids were swollen. She told him McKee had pushed a broom in her eye early Monday morning. She said she had seen a doctor, but hadn’t told him what happened. She was being treated for pinkeye.

Mercier said he and Foley went to the couple’s Bean Court home and met with McKee, who appeared to be drunk. McKee denied any confrontation with his wife, saying they never argue.

McKee was arrested and charged with domestic assault.
