CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Carly Lochala of New Sharon, a junior at Mt. Blue High School in Farmington, led Maine competitors to a sweep of the top five places at the annual MIT one-mile racewalk held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Lochala won the event in 8:05.47, besting second place Mark Dennett of Winthrop, who finished in 8:06.15. Others in the top five were Kate Dickinson of Southboro (8:18.88), Lauren Forgues of Boothbay (8:26.34) and Jessie Smith of Farmington (8:27.95).
Adam Staier of Farmington, a sophomore at Mansfield (Pa.) University, recently was named recipient of the Henry Laskau Memorial Award as the outstanding junior (ages 14-19) male racewalker in the nation. Staier was recognized for his first-place finish at the U.S. Junior Nationals in Palo Alto, Calif., last summer, his first-place finish at the Penn Relays, and his inclusion on the U.S. international team at the Pan American Games in Barbados.
