ORONO – It doesn’t matter what side of the river she’s competing on. Danielle Lainez is going to put up some impressive numbers.
Friday night’s Eastern Maine Indoor Track League opener at the UMaine field house was no different.
Lainez, a senior, won the pole vault (8 feet) and 60 hurdles (9.22 seconds) and finished in a tie for second in the triple jump (32-21/4), leading her Rams to the team victory with 176 points.
Brewer finished second with 61 points, followed by Hampden Academy (59), George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill (43), Foxcroft Academy (41), Sumner of East Sullivan (21), Orono (20) and Bucksport (2).
Matt Collins and his Brewer boys won big in his head coaching debut with 144 points.
Hampden finished second with 108.5, followed by Bangor (67.5) Sumner (55), Bucksport (37), Foxcroft (12), and GSA (6).
Lainez has adapted nicely with her new team, but it has taken some time getting used to a new group.
“It’s kind of weird seeing my former teammates on different sides of the track,” she said. “I’ll get used to that.”
Lainez’s was satisfied with her pole vault and happy with the hurdles.
“I didn’t do what I wanted to do but I did what I usually do in the first meet [in pole vault],” she said. “I’ve been practicing it [pole vault] a lot more since I’ve been at Bangor, which I hope will pay off.”
Lainez is hoping to have similar success with the Rams as she did with Brewer.
“With every athlete, it takes a lot of good coaching, which I have. I should be able to come out strong,” she said.
Bangor coach Maynard Walton was pleased with his girls’ efforts.
Walton is thinking long-term, however.
“In the first meet, we just look to get a mark or distance, and go from there,” he said.
Bangor’s Amanda Mooers and Jesse Dunham went 1-2 in the high jump while teammate Jolene Belanger outsprinted Orono’s Rachel Bergman in the 400. Mooers also won the long jump while Belanger took second. Amanda McGinn, another Ram, was third.
Bangor’s sprinting corps were strong as well, with Kaitlin Dirrig and Kelly Krapf going first and third in the 60 while Kristen Bogan, Katrina Schweikert, Erin MacDermott and Emilie Bronson complimented Lainez with a 3, 4, 5, 6 finish in the hurdles.
On the boys’ side, Collins’ Witches dominated from start to finish in his head coaching debut.
Seniors Mike Parker, Tony Schwarze and sophomore Evan Economy went 1, 2, and 5 in the long jump; Dan Peterson, Josh Hawkes and Tyler Stewart, all seniors, went 2, 4, and 6 in the hurdles while Danny Fox, a newcomer, took third in the 60. Jeremy McAdam, another newcomer, was second in the 60.
Despite the huge win, Collins wasn’t really concerned with points.
“We’re looking more at individual performances,” he said. “Half of them are exceeding what I expected them to do.”
Brewer’s pole vault trio of Mike Parker, Chip Haskell and Matt Quimby all had fine days, going 11-6, 11-0 and 10-6, respectively.
“That’s a powerful trio,” Collins said. “There’s nowhere to go but up.”
The newcomers look good as well, and Collins praised McAdam’s performance in the 60.
“These guys are all athletes,” he said. “He [McAdam] went 6.93 in prelims, anyone can figure where he’ll be at the end of the season.”
Senior Daniel Peterson agreed.
“We took a step in the right direction. Jeremy McAdam got second in the second, and the veterans have a little work to do. All we can do is go up from here,” he said.
Other Brewer winners included David Haluska in the mile and 2-mile. Ryan Birkel took the shot put while Peter McGuire was second in the 800. John Snow finished second in the mile.
