Shopping mall development

Bangor Parkade Inc. is seeking a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers permit to place fill in freshwater wetlands off Stillwater Avenue, associated with the development of a 225,000-square-foot shopping mall in Bangor.

The proposed project involves filling approximately 1.23 acres of freshwater wetland. Additionally, the applicant proposes to create 3.03 acres of freshwater wetland on the site, adjacent to the development, to compensate for the project’s impacts.

The application for the federal permit was filed with the Corps of Engineers in compliance with Section 404 of the Clean Water Act, which regulates the discharge or fill of material in United States waters, including wetlands.

The public notice with plans and descriptions can be reviewed online at the Web site, http://www.nae.usace.army.mil. Select “Regulatory Permitting” and search by file number or state.

To assist in evaluating the proposal, the Corps of Engineers is seeking public comments. Written statements referencing this permit request – file No. 200302497 – should be forwarded to the office no later than Jan. 16. Landscaping business

Mike Falvey DBA Family Tree Landscaping is seeking a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers permit to place fill in freshwater wetlands off Tripp Road and Stillwater Avenue, associated with the expansion of an existing landscaping business.

The proposed project involves retaining and maintaining nearly an acre of freshwater wetland. Approximately 2.13 acres of freshwater wetland have been filled on the site since 1999. The applicant is proposing to remove 1.15 acres of unauthorized fill and to restore the area. Additionally, the applicant proposes to preserve an 8.1-acre wetland-upland buffer between the “Serenity Acres Subdivision” and the City Forest.

Animal practitioner

Don Hanson, co-owner and director of behavior counseling and training at Green Acres Kennel Shop, has qualified as a Bach Foundation registered practitioner, specializing in animals.

He is one of 10 such specialists in the world, and the first in the United States. He used Bach Flower Essences to help resolve emotional and behavioral problems occurring in animals.

For the past 18 months, Hanson has studied under the direction of the Dr. Edward Bach Foundation in Boston and the Natural Animal Centre in Mayfield, East Sussex, United Kingdom.

Classwork involved studying normal and abnormal behavior of dogs, cats and horses, their means of communication (vocalization and body language), their emotional responses and each of the 38 flower essences developed by Bach.

Hanson had to pass written and oral exams and complete both a series of case studies and a field study on a client’s pet.

His inclusion on the foundation’s register indicates that he has committed to the highest standards of professional practice.

Active in the pet community, Hanson serves on the board of directors for the Association of Pet Dog Trainers and is also a member. He is past president and remains a director of the Bangor Humane Society.

He is a certified evaluator for Therapy Dogs International and the American Kennel Club’s canine good citizen program.

He is a member of the International Alliance for Animal Therapy and Healing, the Association of Companion Animal Behavior Counselors, the Animal Behavior Society and the American Boarding Kennel Association.
