BANGOR – Representatives of Packard Development informed Gov. John Baldacci of their plans to construct five new shopping centers across the state, including one in Bangor. The company already has opened one such facility, Maine Crossing, in South Portland.

“This is great news for the state. I am excited about the promise of nearly 3,000 new retail jobs created from the combined impact of the six Packard facilities,” said Baldacci. “The new revenue generated by these projects will impact Maine citizens statewide.”

Baldacci noted that the estimated retail sales from the six facilities would approach $600 million per year. Annual real estate taxes from the buildings are estimated to be $2.7 million. Numerous construction jobs will also result.

Packard Development of Newton, Mass., concentrates on region-based retail construction. Officials have pledged to continue to work with the communities, and have said they intend to ensure that quality of life for residents is enhanced by their involvement.

Maine development projects targeted by Packard, including Maine Crossing in South Portland, are:

. Augusta Crossing in Augusta.

. Morrill’s Corner in Portland.

. Pinetree Center Redevelopment in Portland.

. A site in Bangor.

Most facilities are expected to be open by the fall or winter of 2005.
