ORONO – In high school track, it’s numbers that win meets.

Even though the Brewer High girls’ numbers are down this year from what they normally are, when this team picks on someone it’s own size, watch out.

The Witches proved just that on Saturday, eking out a 61-57 win over runner-up Hermon. Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln was third in Meet ‘A’ with 30 points and Ellsworth had 23 in a multiteam meet at the UMaine field house.

Meets A, B and C were run simultaneously.

Brewer had fine performances in most of its events, particularly in the shot put, where Sarah Hodgins, Kelly Clark and Candice Wilcox went 1-3-4, respectively. Both the Witches’ relay teams were victorious. Rachel Clark also captured the 800 in 2 minutes, 47.25 seconds while Lucienne Merrill complemented her with a fourth-place finish in 3:12.61.

Coach Matt Collins was impressed by his team’s effort. “The girls did as good as they could coming off a hard week,” he said. “They placed real well.”

One person who placed real well was sophomore Angela Commeau, who won the 60 hurdles in 10.90 seconds and was the third leg on the Witches’ winning 4×220 team. “It’s a good win [for the girls]. There’s nowhere to go but up from here,” she said.

Commeau was pleased with her hurdle effort, too. “I’m going to do better every meet,” she said.

She acknowledged that the team is improving as well. “Everybody’s improving every meet,” Commeau said. “A lot of encouragement from the team helps boost us up a little.”

Collins was pleased with his throwers’ efforts as well. “Sarah Hodgins improved by 21/2 feet and Kelly [Clark] was a couple inches from her all-time PR,” he said.

Sophomore Sarah Breau led off the 4×880 in fine fashion, running a 2:43.

Miranda Rancourt, another sophomore, took first in the 400 and third in the 60 while Tessa Miller of Ellsworth won the long jump, 60 and 200.

In Meet B, the Bangor girls were victorious over crosstown rival John Bapst, 148-60, followed by Hampden (41), Sumner of East Sullivan (22) and Orono 11.

And in Meet C, the Old Town Indians won easily over Mount Desert Island 139-54. Foxcroft (41), George Stevens of Blue Hill (24) and Bucksport (4) followed.

On the boys’ side in Meet A, the Witches complemented their girls with a dominating performance, overwhelming runner-up Ellsworth 119-40.5. Mattanawcook was third with 23.5 and Hermon scored 11.

Collins’ sprinters improved quite a bit. “The sprints were the most impressive,” he said. “Chris Fox was impressive for his first meet, and having missed a week of practice.”

Fox won the 60 in a blistering 6.87. “They exceeded expectations in most events,” Collins added.

Jeremy McAdam was second in the same race while Fox’s twin brother Danny was fourth.

Ryan Birkel and Sean Pulley went 1-2 in the shot put with distances of 43 feet, 0.75 inches and 38-4.75, respectively. The pole vault team of Chip Haskell, Mike Parker and Matt Quimby went 2-3-4. Hermon’s Adam Haggerty took the top slot at 12 feet, 6 inches.

David Haluska was second in the mile and first in the 2-mile.

Ellsworth’s Kris Tracy took both the mile and 800 with impressive times of 4:46 and 2:09. “I feel I’m in pretty good shape for the beginning of the season,” he said. “I just need to get the endurance down. I’m pretty strong coming out of soccer with sprinting.”

Tracy and Haluska were together for a better part of the mile until Tracy pulled away in the last 400 meters. “David [Haluska] really pushed me at the beginning of the race,” Tracy said. Haluska finished in 4:50.

Other Brewer winners included Parker in the long jump, while two more Witches, Tony Schwarze and Evan Economy, were right behind him in second and third. Dan Peterson took the top slots in the triple jump and hurdles while Chris Fox also took the 200. Josh Hawkes was second in that race while Mike Ford and Eric Ronco were fourth and fifth, respectively. Hawkes was also second in the hurdles.

Bangor’s boys took Meet B over Hampden 121-107, followed by Sumner (46), John Bapst (9) and Orono (1). Meet C was won by Old Town, 109-70 over runner-up Bucksport. MDI was third with 44, Foxcroft fourth with 36 and George Stevens rounded out the field with 28.
