Belfast teen charged after stabbing incident

BELFAST – A local man has received treatment for multiple stab wounds allegedly inflicted by a juvenile defending his sister’s honor.

Toran Bragdon, 22, of Swan Lake Avenue was stabbed some seven times by a 15-year-old who lives a few houses away, the Belfast police chief said Monday.

The assault occurred before daylight Monday and was triggered after Bragdon allegedly struck the boy’s 17-year-old sister.

“Apparently there had been an earlier altercation between Mr. Bragdon and the juvenile’s sister that spurred this incident,” Chief Allen Weaver said.

City police arrested the 15-year-old and charged him with aggravated assault. He was turned over to juvenile authorities and taken to the youth correctional facility in Charleston.

Also charged in connection with the case was Randall Page, 44, of Belfast, who was charged with assault. Page allegedly fought with Bragdon moments before the stabbing.

Weaver noted that Bragdon is under investigation for an alleged assault on the juvenile’s 17-year-old sister.

Police were alerted to the incident at 5:45 a.m. Monday when Bragdon’s live-in girlfriend called for police and an ambulance to assist “an unconscious male who was bleeding and lying in a snowbank,” Weaver said.

When the police chief and Patrolman Brian Lamb arrived, Bragdon had made his way inside the home, where his girlfriend was attempting “to patch him up,” Weaver said.

Weaver said Bragdon had received “five to seven” wounds to the legs and buttocks. Police collected photographs of bloodstained snow on the ground outside Bragdon’s house.

“I don’t believe they were life-threatening wounds,” he said.

Bragdon lived at the home with his girlfriend, their 3-month-old infant, and the accused’s 17-year-old sister. Weaver said that after interviewing those involved, police determined that Bragdon, who had been drinking, had been arguing with his girlfriend into the night. When the girlfriend left the room, Bragdon continued to argue with the 17-year-old and at some point allegedly struck her.

“I would say alcohol was a factor in the initial incident,” said Weaver. “Instead of calling the police, the female juvenile called her family.”

The altercation between Bragdon, Page and the 15-year-old juvenile took place outside the home a short time later. After the fight, Page and the boy left. When police confronted the juvenile, he admitted stabbing Bragdon with a double-edged knife, police said. The youth told police he threw the knife into some woods.

Maine State Police Trooper Steve Hills searched the general area with his tracking dog, but was unable to locate the knife.

Bragdon was taken by Belfast Ambulance to Waldo County General Hospital, where he was treated and then released.
