Former Milford man sends town a check $30 gift intended to help repair display deer

MILFORD – The town received a belated Christmas present Monday with the arrival of an envelope simply addressed, “Milford Park Committee, Milford, Maine.”

Inside was a check for $30 accompanied by a handwritten letter from former Milford resident Alfred Craig that read: “Please see that the enclosed check gets to the right person for the deer destruction repair.”

One of the automated deer in the town’s Christmas scene in the park was vandalized earlier this month. A few days later someone also stole the plastic Santa Claus that was part of the Christmas display. The town offered a $100 reward to anyone with information about who destroyed the deer, but the guilty party has not been found, according to Acting Town Manager Dawn Cyr.

Craig said Monday he learned of the damage through an article in the Penobscot Times. The $30 is intended to help repair or replace the deer that was vandalized. Cyr said the deer was worth about $50.

“I just did that out of the generosity of my heart, I guess,” Craig said in a telephone interview from his Florida residence.

Cyr, who also is head of the recreation committee that puts up the town’s Christmas decorations each year, said it’s nice to know there are still people who really do care.

“It was so heartwarming,” Cyr said of Craig’s gift. “There is a Santa.”

She said the recreation committee would meet in the near future to decide what to do with the money.

With no street address written on the envelope, Cyr said, she was surprised the town even got the letter during the busy holiday season.

“How we got it, I have no idea – but we got it,” she said. Cyr said she remembers Craig from when she was a little girl.

Craig and his wife, Nancy, now live in Florida for six months of the year and spend the remainder of their time at their home in Hampden.
