Piscataquis County staff’s pay request denied

DOVER-FOXCROFT – Piscataquis County employees who were required to work when county offices were closed because of a snowstorm earlier this month will not receive any extra pay.

Some members of the Sheriff’s Department and jail had asked to be paid time and a half for a total of 231/2 hours because they had worked the storm day while other county employees had the day off with pay.

Sheriff John Goggin, who was not in favor of the extra pay, said it was the duty of his employees to perform their normal functions for public safety.

Commissioner Tom Lizotte agreed: “I know of no place they get paid overtime for a regularly scheduled day.”

The commissioners took no action on the request.

In other business, Lt. Robert Young was reappointed part-time special investigator for the District Attorney’s Office. Young will receive a total of $3,203 for the service in 2004.

A contract with Whitten’s 2-Way Service for 2004 that includes a $270 per month increase was approved. The radio repair service offers 24-hour coverage to the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Department. The contract increased from $465 to $735 a month.

Piscataquis County Sheriff John Goggin said Tuesday he had not budgeted for the increase, but would absorb the difference in the Telecommunications account.

Eben DeWitt was re-elected chairman of the board and Woodrouffe “Tony” Bartley was re-elected vice chairman.
